MINE CALAMITY IN WALES.

SEVENTY LIVES DEĻIEYED TO BE LOST.

MAY 25th. A terrible colliery disaster, involving, it is feared, the loss of upwards of 70 lives, occurred yesterday morning in the South Wales coal- falds. The scene of the calamity is a place known as Senghenydd, a comparatively small village situated about four miles from Cabr philly..

The colliery at which the disaster occurred is the Universal, belonging to a limited liability company, of which Sir W. T. Lewis and Sir Thomas Morel are directors. It is a steam coal colliery, and has only been in operation about five years.

About half-past o'clock the night shift, compris ing several hundreds of men, began to ascend, and shortly after five o'clock all had come up with the exception of 73 men, who formed a --"half-shift," working overtime. Five day fire

men had gone down the pit, making the total number of man in the pit, when the disaster. -occurred 78. Forty minutes later an alarming explosion occurred, and the report was distinct ly heard some miles away over the mountain. The shedding of the shaft on the pithead and the iron structure of it were blown to pieces, and the upcast and downcast were senously damaged.

RESCUE P XTY FOILED.

The colliery manager, Mr. Edward Shaw, and two workmen attempted to descend the shaft, but failed to reach the botton. An hour and a half later Mr. Philip Jones, manager of the Albion Colliery, Mr. S. Gregory, Llanbra dach, Mr. Llewellya, under manager, and Mr. 'T. E. Morgan, of the Universal Co., succeeded in reaching the botton They proceeded a distance about zo vards and found that fear ful havoc had been caused by the, explosion, and that the place was complete wreck. After-datop compelled a retreat.

To the meantime bundreds of workomin had gathered around the top of the pit, mud further rescue parties wore organised About eleven o'clock a party of mining engineers descended the shaft and appear to have reached the gf heading. A little while afterwards the crowd assembled on the bank anxiously awaiting tidings from below, were cheered by'indications of the return of the rescue party.

SEARCH PARTIES STILL WORKING :

· cessation day and night. Some of the last shift told me they had been trying to get into Pretoria, where it is known that many of the imes were working, but had not been, able to make much progess over the great fulls.

Pretoria is nearly a mile, and a half from the shaft, and a most difficult road at any time. The shaft runs down, to a depth of 300 yards. Then the seams run steeply upwards, and again dip rapidly. Not a sound of life has been heard; in fact, so long are the falls that it is thought impossible that any sound could be heard,

Ladysmith has been spached, and seven men were found there-dend.

So far the total number of bodies brought up i3 29. Of these 26 have been identified, and three are lying in their coffins in the shed, battered, poor fellows almost beyond recogal¦ tion.

The shift which came up at midnight had made little progress, except in repairs.

They had found three more bodies, making

SIR A. MILNER ARRIVES IN

ENGLAND.

WARM WELCOME AT SOUTHAMPTON AND IN LONDON.

A home paper of the 29th ult, says :— Long before the Union Castle Companys vessel Saron, with Sir A. Milner on board, was sighted yesterday rounding Calshot Castle, a large number of people had assembled in the shed adjourning No. 36, Ocean Quay, South- ampton, which was very tastefully decorated with flags,

There was a slight delay off Netley whilst the port medical officer boarded the ship, but the Saxon arrived alongside ut noon

There were present receiva Sir Alfred Milner, Lord Grey, Sir Edward Green, Mr. George Wyndham, M.P,'Sir Lewis MacIvor, Major Hanbury Williams, Lord Monk Bretton, Sir Francis Ommanney, Sir Godfrey Langden, Sir Henry Thompson, Sir Francis Evans, and others.

The Mayor and Corporation of Southampton and the members of the Chamber of Commerce were also on the quay.

A guard of honour was supplied by men of the 4th Battalion Oxfordshire Light Infantry.

The Mayor formally welcomed Sir A. Milner, who replied very briefly. The High Come missioner then left for London by special train

at. 12.15.

FLAG OF THE OPEPE TRIBE TOUCHED BY THE XING.

A recent Court Circular contains the follow ing announcement:

"Major Askwith, Royal Horse Artillery, lately commanding the Artillery Contingent in the Imperial Representative Corps sent to Australin for the proclamation of the Common wealth, had the honour of being received in audience by His Majesty, and presented. for the King to touch the flag of the Opepe tribe of Maoris.

"This flag, which was a small Union Jack, with a representation of Queen Victoria in the centre, was entrusted to Major Askwith when in New Zealand by Taupo, the chief of the tribe, to take to England, in accordance with the tribal custom that, on the dainise of their sovereign, the flag should be handed to the successor, and then returned to the chief"

On 20th May, says Vienna telegram to the Hall & Co., F. W. Daily Mall, Queen Draga driven to despair Hands W by recent events, made an attempt to commit Hamlin, Mrs. G. suicide in the Rayal Palace at Belgrade. She obtained possession of a small revolver by heavily bribing one of her maids to bring it to her. The Queen was in the act of pointing the, revolver at her right temple when King Alexander unexpectedly entered the room.
