ur two, but even in broad daylight the slender object would easily escape the most vigilant watch, especially if the water were at all ruffled. Still it is admitted that the range of vision of the periscope is exceedingly limited. The problem of providing the submarine boats with "yes" bas still to be solved satisfactorily.

We learn, says the Bombay Gorelle of the 4th instant, that there is no truth in the state ment wired to the up-country papers from the Englishman to the effect that Ahmednagar is more unhealthy than any Cantonment in India except Peshawar. The last statistics which have been conspiled are for the year 1899, which was an unhealthy one in Anmednagar, owing to the failure of rains over the area în. which is situated. Yet, its death-rate for European troops under the same conditions as the Baer prisoners was lower than the corres -ponding death rate even in such hill stations as Landour, Kasauli, Murree, and Mount Abu and was less than half that of Dum-Dum. In 1898, which was a more average year, the European troops' death-rate la. Ahmednagar was little over half that of the correspond. ing total for Nainital troops. It was belowArthur, Mr. that of troops in the hill stations of Ranikhet; Agathe, G. Cherat, Rawalpindi, Landour, Kasauli, Murree Amor, G. A. and Mount Abund exceeded only by Amateur, H. K. a fraction of that of troop, in such healthy Burson, Chas. resorts as Darjeeling and Dalhousie.
Bryan, M. R. regards the plains stations its death-rate was less than one third that of European troops in Peshawar and half that of troops in such sta tions as Lucknow and Ferozepure. The com: parison over a longer series of years: would probably show even more advantageously to wards Ahmednagar, which has long been a favourite station amongst troups,

QUEEN ALEXANDRA'S LAMP.
"Truly the light is sweet!" Man's words are imperishable, and they gather förce in the Light Department of the London Hospital Owing to the compassion and gene rosity of Queen Alexandra (says a writer in the May number of The Quiver) a portion of one of the new temporary wards bears this pleasant and suggestive name, and treats forly patients daily with very encounging results. In 1896 Dr. Finsen, Dane, founded an institute in Copenhagen for the treatment of lupus and other diseases of the skin by light. Sufferers from various countries, including England, flocked to it, and found in some cases relief and in others, permanent cure, The then Princess of Wales could not rest until the treatment was brought within the reach of the poor of her adopted country. She presented the apparatus to the London Hospital, where all the arrange. ments for its use have been carried out by Dr. Stephen Mackenzie and Dr. Sequeira, who paid a visit to the Finsen Institute. One lamp was: found quite insufficient, so a second was soon provided by the governors of this great hospital of the East-End. The total capital outlay has been £1,000, and preparations for the erection of a third light are nearly complete. As sum. light cannot be always depended upon, a ward where artificial light can be used was a neces sity in addition in the open-air apparatus, for which a part of the hospital garden is set apart On entering the ward. the first impression is the sound of cheerful though subdued conver sation between the nurses and patients. Two electric lamps are suspended froin the ceiling. each provided with four telescopes. Around ench of them, and it such a position that the lamp can look down through its mag nifying glasses like a beneficent eye on the affected spots, four patients recline on couches. Beside, cach, her eyes protected by black spectacles, a nurse sits pressing a lens on the crimson patch which indicates that a germ, known on account of it cruel rapacity by the name of lupus, is hiding under the patient's skin. In this position they remain for an hour at a time. Through the black spectacles, a spot fringed with red may be discerned agitating below the lens. It is white, the nurse explains, because the pressure makes it anemic, and the agitation in the glass is due to current of cold water finwing through the hollow lens by means of india-rubber pipes. She had no pain, the round-faced, healthy, locking young patient said with a smile, and she listened with interest to an explanation of the process given by the sister and nurse. It is founded on the principle that light, it can be so concentrated as to pene- trate through the skin, kills the disease germ. But how is light to attack the wolf without burning or indaming the flesh of the wolf's Victim ? The scorching red and the chemical white rays are subdued by their passing first through cold water. The blue and ultra-violet rays are powerless to hurt the skin, though merciless to destroy bacteria. It is natural to suppose that the young are the most hopeful cases, but the sister and nurse took pleasure in recalling the complete recovery of a white. haired old lady after fifty-two attendances at the London Hospital. It is encouraging that some of the patients cured in the Finsen Institute have been quite free from any recur. rence of the disease for two years. The ex- quisite poetry which promises healing in the wings of the Sun of Righteousness is based on a scientific fact. Light is life and health. It will be recounted in the history of our gracious Queen Alexandra that she brought ber country a blessing that must surely reflect on herself in her people'wlove and gratitude.

THE NEW FRENCH REMEDY,
THERAPION.
This succesful and highly popular remedy, as employed in the Continental Hospitals by Ricord, Kostan, Jobert, Velpeau, and others, combines all the desiderata to be sought in a medicine of the kind, and surpasses everything, hitherto employed.
THERATION No. 1, in a few days only, removes all discharges from the urinary organs, effectually superseding injections, the use of which does irreparable harm by laying the foundation of stricture and other serious dis eases. In dysentery, piles, irritation of the lower bowel, congh, bronchitis, asthma, and some of the more trying complaints of this kind, it will be found astonishingly efficacious. affording prompt relief where other well-tried remedies have been powerless.

In an article on submarine boats in the May number of the Pall Mall Magasing the writer, says: The most serious difficulty that has yet to be overcome is to enable the commander of A submarine to see his way. The natural qualities of deep water, its seeming impervious- ness to human sight, appear to make this diffi culty almost insuperable. The French claim, however, that they have to some extent evaded it. It is intended in practice that the sub marines shall proceed to their destination on the surface so long as they are in no danger of being observed. On nearing a hostile fleet or har bour they will sink, and rely for their safety and officacy as engines of destruction.on their capacity for travelling under water. It should be added that, owing to special contrivance of which the secret is carefully guarded, but as to the results of which there is no doubt, the submarines take far less time to sink when under way than when at rest. In the Hatter case, when the effect is obtained solely by letting in a certain quantity of water, several minutes are required for the craft to go under whereas when it is in mation its disappearance is very rapid, and almost instantaneous, when all that emerges the low conning tower, or rather cap from which a glimps of the horizon is obtained. In warfare this almost invisible cap, which sur-Bove and Co. Supt. mounts the crest of the vessel in the centre, is all it can be hoped to catch sight of from a Burkeh Ali Khan, hostile ship. The submarine. boat, when ap proaching its expected prey, may have to rise for a moment to the extent of showing this cap, so as to allow the commauder to make the final observations by which he will direct his torpedo. It is by no means certain, however, that the necessity for this exposure immediately Chunda Singh, J.P.G.585 Mondha Singh before the discharge of the torpedo has not Clarke, ]." already been obviated.
