come of it and that the greatest viz, charity, A tenth pats of the profits is devoted to alle viating the distress of their poorer brethren, the maimed, balt and blind, hence the spectacle of a Chinese beggar in Calcutta, is not only a rarity, but one that does not exist. (From this paragraph it seems that Chinese charity does not begin at home. There are beggars enough in Hongkong and China. Or perhaps, on second thoughts; it is their charity that makes them keep their beggars at home. Scrupulously honest, may apply to the merchant class, but all others are certainly excluded ; of course we are not speaking of the Chiness in India.)

A typical Chinese laily is not an everyday sight. A few there are, but very few indeed a Chinaman going into exile, goes there plone, unencumbered with his good lady. But this does not make him a celibate; far from it, as he is matrimonially inclined, as soon as he secures a house. The poorer classes of Fast Indians are not only willing, but welly pleased, if a Chinaman does them the favour of asking their hands. A pleasant home, a fixed income, and a sober and affectionate husband is assured them. They are for the most part Roman

·Catholics by faith, and stipulate that the children born of wedlock should be baptised of the same faith. The Chinaman, having but a hazy and confused recollection of the tenets of Buddhism and Confuciism, gladly assents, and the marriages, in question, with scarcely an exception, prove singularly happy.-C. & M. Gaselle.

TOLSTOY ON MODERN SOCIETY.

Count Tolstoy thinks that the workingman is cheated and bullied out of the just reward for his labour because he has the wrong con- ception of Christianity because he accepts "Church Christianity" instead of the real teach. ing of Jesus. The practical teaching of the church in every land, thinks Tolstoy, is that men must believe what is taught thêm, and submit to the existing authorities and this

doctrine "is the foundation of the deceit through which men come to consider military service a gond and useful occupation, enlist as soldiers, and become like machines, without will, oppressing themselves," and imposing the will of the few upon the many.

Tolstoy begins the article (in the April North American Revicze) in which he advances these opinions by picturing a group of Russian peasants who stand aside to let a picnicking party of the rich drive.by. One of the ladies hats has cost more than the horse with which the peasant plaughs the field "the black hat with the lilac veil alome has cost two months!. stonebreakers' labour," and for the gentleman's riding-stick has been paid a' werk's wages of an underground workman. Everywhere, two or three men in a thousand live so that, doing nothing for themselves, they eat and drink in one week what would have fed hundreds for a year; they wear garments costing thousands of dollars; they live in palaces, where thousands of workmen could have been housed; and they spend upon their caprices the fruits of thousands and tens of thousands of working days. The others, sleep- less and unfed, labour beyond their strength, ruining their physical and tnoral health for the benefit of these few chosen ones." It is natural that the rich should not object to this arrangement; the surprising thing is that the poor take it so complacently, "Why do all the men, strong in physical vigour, in skill, and in the habit of Labour-the eñor mous majority of humanity-why do they sub mit 10 and obey a handful of feeble men, gene- rally incapable of anything, and effeminate- old men, and especially women?" Count Tolstoy finds the answer very simple. It is because the minority have money, and the workingmen need the money to feed their families. Millions of workmen submit "because one man has usurped the factory, another the" land, and a third the taxes collected from the workomen."-Literary Digest.
