AT Brentford recently Edward Langley, a bright little lad of nine, summoned a woman named Evans for malicibus assault. The boy stated that he was a newspaper seller, and on one occasion while he was waiting outside a Brentford publishing office he stooped down and looked through the keyhole of the door. immediately he felt a sharp pain in his eye, and found that it was caused by a hatpin. The sight of the eye was permanently destroyed. Defendant, who pleaded that the occurrence was an accident, was sentenced to 21 days'

hard labour.

THE VITRIOL OUTRAGE The cross-examination of Mr. Hays having charging of Allen was given by Police Inspec tors Cuthbert and Garo Galud.

Mr. Francis then addressed the Jury for the defence. He pointedout the very slender nature of the evidence upon which the Prisoner had been charged and went on to show that the whole of the case rested upon the evidence of attempted to show that Allen had some motive the first witness for the Crown. The Crown bad for throwing the fluid upon Reek, but they had failed to do so, and he held that it was impossible to get any jury to believe that any European would instigate.a Chinaman lo throw uitic acid vpon another European for no reason whatever. Reek himself had given Allen a good character and had stated that no ill feeling existed between them. Mr. Francis then called the attention of the jury to the fact that Me Hays' account of his conversation with the Prisoner as given in his evidence at the Police Court and in the written statement which

he had taken down shortly after the conversation

was held, bore a very different light. In the statement it was said that Allen stated he came to see Mr. Hays on the behalf of the man's relations and Mr. Hays had not mentioned this fact in his evidence, thus leading one to believe that Allen came solely on his own account and not as the agent of Lo Troi's relations. Even though Allen had known that some assault was contemplated upon Reck. it did not bring him within reach of the law. He submitted that the whole of the case for the Crown rested on the evidence of the first wit- hess and as this was not to be relied upon his client should be discharged,

His Lordship having summed up at some length, the jury, without retiring, returned a unanimous verdict of not guilty.
