THE WELSBACH LIGHT,
The Franklin Institute does excellent service by investigating through its committees the merits of various modern inventions. The immediate object is the granting of rewards or rewards or honours in the gift of the Institute; but so long as the reports published remain perfectly honest and free from blas, the benefit conferred on the world at large is very great indeed!
As soon as theory.explained the illuminating power of a flame to spring from the incandes- cent particles of solid matter which were float ing, in it, efforts began to be made having as their object the substitution of some stationary solid body for these doating particles.
The particles of carbon in a common fame are separated because the combustion is in- complete and presumably therefore their form ation lowers the temperature of the flame,
Perhaps the first inventor to be mentioned is Drummond, the originator of the well-known oxyhydrogen limelight : but the incandescence of a large mass of solid matter is not necessarily connected with the idea we now consider. it was not until the early eighties that patents based on the incandescence of small filaments in a gas flame were granted.
Charles Lun ren prepared hlaments of re- fractory oxides such as lime, magnesia, zirconia, etc., by forcing a plastic mass through a die, and then coiling or shaping suitably the wire or filament obtained before it dried and lost its pliability. It was in 1885 that Carl Auer von Welsbách invented his "mantle." The essentially new and original feature about his process was the ingenious method by which the Glaments of oxide were produced in the 'exact form they were fimately to assume. Cotton fibre woven into the desired, shape was saturated with soluble salts of the earth metals to be used and the whole then burnt the result being a woven mass in ash consisting mostly of the oxides which were to be the source of radiation. He also found that certain oxides had particularly good radiating power. A mixture of the oxides of lanthanum and thorium, together with a little uranium or cctium oxide, has a very high illuminating power-produces when incandescent a vivid and nearly white light.
dried.
The common "mantles" are made as follows. A six cord cotton thread is woven on a knitting machine into a tube of knitted fabric with rather open mesh. This web being throughly cleaned from grease and dirt is soaked in a fluid prepared from monazite sand which yields in the finished mantles oxides of thorium and cerium: it is then wrung out, stretched over spools and Pieces of this have an end turned over and sewn with platinum wire, drawing the top in and providing a means for supporting the mantle when finished. After stretching the mantle over a form, smoothing it down and fastening the platinum wire to the wire mantle holder, the mantle is burnt by touching with a Bunsen bumer at the top. The cotton buras slowly and leaves a skeleton mantic of metallic oxides which perserves the exact shape and detail of every cotton fibre. The soft oxides are then hardened by the Budsen fame.
The candle power of mantles so prepared is equal to 20 candles per cubic foot of "coal gas used per hour (an ordinary 8-foot fish tail beer gives not more than 3 candle power per cubic foot per hour) The life of the mantles, is probably not much below 1,000 hours.
Without proper burners of course the mantles are useless: excellent burners have been devised and all things considered, the Welshack light is a decided. success, but of course it has.certain drawbacks; and on the impartial mention of such rests all the value which at present attaches to the published reports of the Franklin committees..
The manile is exceedingly fragile, and can- not be kept where it is subject to continued vibration; the quality of the light is such as to require the adjectives ghastly" and "harsh" in describing it, and often a greenish tinge is noticeable. The caddle power drops rapidly early in the life of a mantle, and the mantle's are particularly subject to this falling off where there is much dust in the air: before a mantle breaks the candle, power may have fallen as As much as one half of its original value. There -is, however, a large balance in its favour in our account with the Welsbach light, the .sum of these faults notwithstanding-Indian

AN AUTOMATIC BOOT-CLEANING
MACHINE.
An ingenious Frenchman, says the Daily Mail, has brought over to London the latest automaton He calls it the auto-cireur. You put a penny in one slot, and your feet in an- other, and it blacks your boots.
It is a bulky-looking pedestal with a brass | rail in front of it and a projecting base, a footstool's height from the ground, hav- ing three good-sized foot-holes in it." The machine is connected up with an electric light wire. Having dropped the penny in the slot you steady yourself by the brass. rail, put one foot in the left-hand foot-hole, and pull the lever. It is as well to turn up the trousers first, although thorough and hyper- consistent people who want their full panny worth and their trousers blacked as well as their boots may omit this formality. Having pulled the lever. a set of revolving brushes, amid which the foot has been placed, begins to work, with a sensation ns if a million rats were scampering about in the machine,
This first hole is the mud removing depart ment. As soon as the boot is clean you move to the second hole, where another set of revolv- ing brushes applies the blacking, and then to the third hole, which is the polishing depart ment. Then you repeat the process with the other foot, unless you are accentric or one- legged, and proceed either to use your boots to walk about in or as mirrors. An. indicator shows how long each foot should be, kept in each of the three holes,

THERAPION.
This succesful and highly popular remedy, as employed in the Continental Hospitals by Ricard, Kostan, Jobert, Velpeau, and others, combines all the desiderata io be sought in à medicine of the kind, and surpasses everything hitherto employed,
| “THERAPION No. 1, in a few days only, removes all discharges from the urinary organs, effectually superseding injections, the use of which does irreparable harm by laying the foundation of stricture and other serious dis- enses. In dysentery, piles, irritation of the lower bowel, cough, bronchlis, asthma, and some of the more frying complaints of this kind, it will be found astonishingly efficacious, affording prompt relief where other well-tried remedies have been powerless..
THERAPION No, for impurity of the blood, scurvy, pinples, spots, blotches, pains and swellings of the joints, secondary symp toms, disease of the bones, sore throat, and all diseases for which it has been ton much a fashion to employ mercury, sarsaparilla, &c., to the destruction of the sufferer's teeth and ruin of health. This preparation parifies the whole system through the blood, and throughly eliminates every poisonous matter from the. body.
THERAPION No. 3, fornervous exhaustion, waste of vitality, and all the distressing con sequences arising from early error, excess, residence in hot, unhealthy climates, c. 11 posseses surprising power in restoring strength and vigour to the debilitated.
THERAPION. may be procured of the prin- cipal Chemists and Merchants throughout the world. Price in England 2/9 and 4/6. In order ing, the purchaser should state which of the three numbers he requires, and observe that the word "THERAPION" appears on the Govern ment, Stamp (in 'white letters on a red ground) affixed to every genuine package by order of Her Majesty's Hon.
