And it is equally patent that by far the greater proportion of this loss would have been saved had there been a sufficiently large typhoon shelter or shelters to have accom- modated the whole of the junks, sampaos, lighters and launches of the Colony, During the last ten years there have been five severe typhoons and the loss sustained by small craft in them must, at a very moderate estimate, have amounted to half a million dollars of more. Now, if the construction of one or two more breakwaters will mean the saving to the Colony of half a million dollars in launches, Tighters, sampans and junks every ten years, surely it is the duty of the Government to undertake the construction of these break-THR waters at once. The acquisition of the New Territory has placed at the disposal of the Government several areas which are handy and suitable for the construction of typhoon shelters. Typhoon Shelters.
At the meeting of the Hongkong and Kow. loon Wharf and Godown Co., Ld., held yester- day, the Chairman, the Hon. J. J. KESWICK, touched upon a subject to which we have fre: quently attempted to direct the attention of the Authorities, viz, the necessity for the provision: of further shelters for craft during typhoons.
Mr. KESWICK said:"This Causeway Bay shelter, which no doubt was good enough for the days when it was made, is barely sufficient to receive small craft alone, and quite inade- quate for the hundreds, if not thousands, of cargo boats and other craft that need protection in the typhoon season. The anchorage off Yau- ma-ti is good so long as the wind remains in one direction, viz, from the North East, but forms a most dangerous trap in the event of it shifung, as was the case in the November. typhoon and it is to be hoped that further ac comodation may be provided in time to avoid a repelition of the damage dong on that occasion." And he also stated that, had more shelter been. available for the Godown Company's craft during the typhoon, of November last, the damage sustained by the Company (amounting to no less than $10,000) would have bean con

Brigade." As may be guessed from the title, the book deals with the experiences of the crew of the Terrible, both in South Africa and in China and gives a very good aud clear account of the part taken by them in both campaigns. It is written by a member of the crew of the big cruiser over the initials GC and is, so the author says, but a forerunner of a larger illustrated work which it is his inten- tion to publish at the close of his ships com- mission. The story of the work of the Terribles is given in narrative form and contains much of interest to the general reader, while some good maps aid one considerably in understand ing the operations described.
