The offer made by Dr. Stedman of house until some other accommodation can be room at the Peak Hospital for the nurses

We cannot, ourselves, see that there ought to be any difficulty in carrying the scheme for a nursing institute through. At the present time we believe, many people are deterred from engaging the avail -[3:30 able nurses by the knowledge that they are not often available, and we think that an in- stitution on the lines proposed at Saturday's meeting will lead to nurses being more extensively employed than formerly, and this will mean that the deficit will not be so great as it has been each year in the case of the Government nurses. Add to this the fact that Government institutions are in variably expensive, and we think that there can be no doubt but that a nursing instituite can soon be put upon a self supporting basis is the Colony. At all events, we hope that 14the public will come forward generously, as the proprietors of the Peak Hospital have already done, and so give the new departure

It is seldom that more than a dozen seagulls or terns are seen together in Hongkong; these bids apparently only coming into the harbour in very cold or heavy weather. Yesterday, however, there was a very large flock of two species of gull assembled near Tsin-wan Bay, where they were busily picking up the bits of garbage thrown over from the dustboats. The lock must have numbered some three or four having seen so many together in the neigh hundred birds and we do not remember ever bourhood of the Colony. The heary weather reported in the China Sea of late may perhaps account for their thus congregating, or it may be that the birds were assembling 'prior to moving north.

(rather late in the day, perhaps) that the partitions were against the Building Ordinance, and against the law." It is satisfactory to note that Mr. Ormsby did not agree with his assist ant's view of this valuable information. The general opinion of the Sanitary Board seemed to be the very sensible-one that partitions afforded the means of sitting in the vendab ensured a certain degree of privacy, that they without being disturbed in the evening, and that much could be said in favour and little against them. The only dissentient seems to have been Dr Bell. He didn't care what the custom was, he was "agin" it. He had his opinions and he'd tell the Government. How erer, an amendment was proposed and carried that the Government be asked not to move in the matter, at all. Plague is on the increase now, and it may be hoped that the Sanitary Board will turn their attention to preventive measures, instead of frittering away their time in what is admittedly a trivial matter, even by those who bring it forward. Nothing is to be expected in the shape of help and advice to his fellow-servants in the Board, when the Vice- President says, practically, that he does'nt know what the custom in the matter sub judice may be, whether it is right or wrong, or expedient or otherwise, he is against it, and will hold thai,
