This of course would account for the strong suspicion that Mr. Kruger sleeps with his boots on. It is evidently not a mere Boer characteristic.

J. D. MCAULIFF, an American gragshop keeper in Ticatsin, was tied in the U.S. Consular Court there last week for attempting to murder two French soldiers by shooting at them with Shanghai papers of the 1st inst, the French a revolver. From evidence it appeared, say men were guilty of very violent conduct and tried to bayonet McAuliTM and other people in the bar, and that he only fired in self-defence, boring a good sized hole in the stomach of one of his assailants. He was accordingly acquitted.

think I explained fully why we considered the time had now arrived when we might justly re-this vert to the scale of remuneration which was decided upon when the Company was formed. I might, however, add that in 1891, before we took the general management and financed the Company through its troubles, another influen- tial Company was approached on the subject, and I find on reading the old minutes of micet ings that the terms named by them were in ex- cess of what we now propose. Before putting the resolution to you i shall be pleased to give any further information.

Mr. Murray Bain-It might be well, for the sake of the newer shareholders, to give a little more information about the terms formerly pro- posed, so as to give some basis on which to vote. 1 am one of the original shareholders, and know pretty well what has happened, but n great number of the shareholders know practi- cally nothing of the history of the Company.

The Chairman said-I find in the minule. book a report of a meeting held in 1891, at which the following terms were proposed to be which Mr. Murray Bain was present and at charged by an influential legal company ap pointed to conduct the general management: carnings; a minimum remuneration of $2,500 To receive five per cent. of the gross per annum, which will include office clerks, but not stationery or other charges. In addition to the above remuneration, this Company to take one-quarter of the nett profits after they (the nett profits) amount to seven per cent, and one half after they amount to ten per cent. That, I think, is as much as it is necessary to tell you.

Mr. Murray Bain-Thank you,

Mr. Murray Bain seconded, and the resolu- tion was carried unanimously.
