Mr. Putts claimed a foul against Bulbul, owned by Mr. J. H. Lewis, and after a meeting which lasted considerably over an hour, the stewards upheld the protest and the race was, awarded to "Forest King." Mr. W. W. Cox rode King and Mr. Johnson was the Jacker for Bulbul.

CANTON NOTES.
HOLIDAY WEATHER, (From Our Own Correspondent.)
CANTON, February 27th. The Chinese are jubilant over the fine weR- ther for the New Year holidays. Usually the weather is wet and cold at the beginning of the Chinese year. This year the weather has been all that could be desired and the Chinese have taken full advantage of it. During the past three or four days the Fati flower gardens have been thronged with sight-seers and pleasure seekers. All seen happy and intent on having a good time. The shops have nearly all resumed business and the city is rapidly losing its holiday appearance.
FALL IN PRICES.
Just before the New Year there was a very unexpected fall in the price of building materials. At that time it was supposed that the dealers were lowering prices in order to reduce the stock on hand and secure money for payment of debts Howeyer, the New Year has opened with the reduced prices, and with the prospect that the lower prices will continue.

At Shek Wan in the Nam. Hoi, district there has been a clan fight which has resulted in the death of several persons.. It appears that an idol procession was in progress, and that the stronger clan cast, some reflection on the dis- play of the smaller clan. This was resented and a free fight ensued. Knives and revolvers werefused and many wounds and several deaths
were the result.
