It seems a great pity to us, and to a great many other people as well, that the spot chosen for the Proclamation of Accession should have been the Cricket-Ground and not the Happy Valley, On the Cricket Ground everybody was jumbled together owing to the very circumscribed area, white in the Happy Valley the whole population of the Colony could have been easily accou modated, Then too, what better place could have been found for the making of the Pro clamation than the Grand Stand, from the, front of which the Proclamation could have been read, while the principal residents were grouped at the back of His Excellency the Governor and the whole European popula tion of the Colony was accommodated in the entlosure.

We have also a word foʻsay to the Public Works Officials, who are, we presume, re sponsible for the erection of the platform on the Cricket Ground. But for the fact of its being covered with red instead of black cloth, it strongly reminded pre of the pictures one sces of the executions on Tower Hill."

We have frequently had occasion to remark upon the carelessness of Chinese coxswains, who do not appear to regard their duties ser- iously. This was well illustrated this morning, when one of the Star Ferry Coy's double ender arrived at the Kowloop wharf with a small European boy, of apparently six or eight years of age, working the engine room telegraph for: the coxswain. The youngster certainly did his duty well, but, although amusing to him, we do not think that such experiments are conducive to the welfare of the "Company's launches or the safety of passengers.

COMMENTING upon the breakdown of the French mail-steamer, Sydney, the Singapers Free Prets says:-The long delay must cause a great deal of annoyance and inconvenience to the public generally, and it is indeed unfor tunate for the prestige of the Messageries Maritimes that there should occur so serious a dislocation of its service. It is not very long ago that s. s. Splenis had a break down in her machinery, on the outward run from Marseilles to Colombo, which delayed the arrival of outward mail here nearly a week, and now serious delay of probably seven or eight Lay must naturally throw out the postal and other arrangements that were made is dependence on the due arrival of the French mail

THE expedient recorded in the following note is as practical as it is novel-A dispatch to the Chicago Tribune from Columbus, O, says that in order to secure immediately valuable papers belonging to her dead husband, the late Col, 5. Pickard, a civil engineer, who died a few days ago, an expert safe blower, now a convict in the state penitentiary at Columbus, was loaned to Mrs. Richard by the warden long enough for him to open the strong box in which the important papers were kept. The prisoner was conveyed through the city in a closed carriage to the safe, which he blew open, and was returned to his call before' daylight in the morning. All private papers were locked up in Col. Pickard's safe, the dead man alone having koown the combination. The

e town was searched in vain for an expert to open the safe, and the novel plan of securing the services of a burglar was adopted: 1, took the Convict 12 minutes to open the safe.
