NINGPO.

32nd January.

THE SEASON'S FESTIVITIES. Ningpo can safely be styled as one of the quiet ports, for apart from the daily steamer from Shanghai and an occassional visit of one. of Her Majesty's gunboats, not a vestige of new life appears from one year's end to another. If there is a more lively time than another it is when the old. year is fast drawing to a close, and then obscure Ningpo rises with phoenix- like freshness to make merry, and is not a whit behind in giving the New Year a right royal welcome.

As on previous occasions the Customs Club, was one of the great centres of attraction. No pains had been spared in the choice decora tion of the reception room, and when illumin ated on Christmas eve it was turned into a ve itable fairy land. A most successful smak ing concert was held, and it was unanimously decided that a repetition should take place on New Year's eve, when invitations were extended to the ladies. A good gathering mas ered and an admirable programme was carried through almost without a hitch. The evening's. enjoy. ment was opened by the chorus" Old folks at home," and was followed by a dute solo" Man- ley March," by Mr. Manley, whose performance was greatly appreciated. "La Seranata," by Mr. Russell, was very effective indeed and kid manipulition of the violin did him gre credit. Mr. Ackermann, contributed two

Bedouin love, song" songs, "The

and "Les Raincaux," both of which were encored to the echo. Mr. Manley also favoured us with "Sing one of the nid songs," which actual ly brought down the house. The "Tin gee gee," by Mr. Russell, caused no end of metri. ment, as did also the whistling solo Tommy Atkins," by Mr. Mitchell. Mr. McKarrow evoked many plaudits in his rendering of "The French Musketeer" and "More than ever." Mr. Nichol's rendering of "Poor old Joe" and Christmas Bells" by Mr. Mitchell also added greatly in the evening's enjoyment. "I will wander back again," by Mr. Willis, was well received, and the evening was brought to a close by a duet "'ll take you home again, Kathleen," by Messrs Willis and McKarrow.

Saturday was also a day which will long be remembered by the children. The Customs staff arranged a Christmas tree, and Saturday afternoon saw it heavily laden with some most magnificient presents. Mr. Horell was spe- cially gond in the role of Father Christmas, and the children had a high time as they delv ed into those wonderful pockets which seemed to contain a never ending store of gondies. The merriment was kept at a high pitch throughout thanks to the ingenious nigger and the laughable clown whose antics and mimicry did great credit both to Mr. McKarrow and Mr. Manley. The children returned home loaded with toys and sweetmeats, and the Christmas tree proved to be one of the most enjoyable and successful events of the season's festivities, and great praise is due to the whole of the Customs staff for the liberal way in which they have entertained the community,

THE LATE CAPTAIN R. DOWNIE.

3rd January. Widespread sorrow was felt on receiving the unexpected news of the death of Captain Downie. He had been suffering for some time past, but no one anticipated his end was so On his illness becoming more acute he entered the General Hospital, Shangbai, where he received every attention. We all hoped he would soon return to his duty once more with a new lease of life, but a sudden change for the worse took place, and in the course of a few days of his entering the hospital we grieved to receive news of his death,

Mrs Downie and the two children left for home last summer, and the Captain hoped to join them this coming spring. We therefore condole with his widow and children who are left to mourn the one who was beloved of all. -Mercury Cor.

recognised, and it is hoped that his arrest, when effected, muy lead to the capture of the accom-- plices. It has not yet been established whether the victim was first strangled, and all the efforts of the doctors and police engaged on the case are still directed towards the identification of the badly, a task rendered extremely difficul! owing.to

THE MUTILATION.

-

Once that is accomplished it is hoped that the first step in the unravelling of the mystery the discovery has been prepared. Every trail will have been made. A plan of the scene.of is being followed, and all persons remotely connected with the finding of the two parcels containing the remains have been carefully examined by the magistrates charged with the elucidation of the gruesome business. But of all the evidence collected the most valuable seems to be that of M. Jacquemont, who from his window on Monday night saw six men in the neighbourhood of the Rue des Plarries. talking in a low voice. Finally two of them left the others, and he noticed that one of them carried a large parcel, which he threw into a ditch where it was found next morning Afterthis

THE SIX MEN MADE OFF.

."

With regard to the parcel deposited behind the street door in the Faubourg St. Denis little doubt is entertained that the two men seen by the grocer, and milkman in front of the house, and whose movements they regarded as suspicious, belonged to the same band. The evilence of these three witnesses agrees in most particulars, and although their informa- tion is vague, the police consider that as the assassins number half a dozen vengeance was probably the motive of the crime, and that a fatal indiscretion on the part of one of them will bring them within the grip of the law. is at work, and it is believed that a clue will be a minute examination of the paper, the material obtained before long. Experts have concluded of the curtain and the waxed cloth in which the two parcels were wrapped, and police in- spectors all over Paris and the suburbs are try; ing to match these. The murder is supposed to have taken place about seven or eight o'clock at night in one of the numerous hovels situated between the quarters of the Faubourg St. Denis and Pere Lachaise, and the police remark that. a curious circumstance is that no woman bas come forward to vouchsafe an opinion as to deceased. As a result of the medical examin-Lange, W. ation of the remains Dr. Socquet is of opinion that the cutting up was probably done by butcher or a charcutter, and that the victim was bled before being dissected.
