THE DREDGER. Preparations for the raising of the capsized dredger. Canton River are proceeding apace. She is lying on her side with her buckets and apper works pointing away from the Praya, and these have sunk in the mud to some ex tent. Ubains have been rove round her, oyer her side and deck, and made fast to the gunwale now resting on the mud, so that when these are hauled upon she will be rolled over into an upright position.
·
The destroyer Handy is made fast along- side and is to pump air into the interior of the dredger so as to the lighten Ler as much as possible. Around the superstructure of the buckets etc., which has sunk in the mud, some small charges of explosives bare been placed and, when all is ready and the chains are being hauled upon, these will be fired to loosen the mud. The chains are led over a large lighter which is moored alongside the capsized craft and they are supported by a couple of junks in the course of the run to the shore, where the gear for hauling upon them is situated. Once the craft has been righted her floating will be a comparatively easy matter. We wish Cap. tain Percy Scott every success in his plucky attempt.

"THE BELLE O NEW YORK?
The matinee performance of the "Belle of New York," given. last Saturday afternoon by the popular Lilliputians, was a great success, the inutbers of the numerous children of the colony taking full advantage of the kindness of Mr. Pollard in preparing such a treat for their children. The youngsters seemed to excited faces. So much has already been said enjoy themselves to judge from their bright about this popular piece that it is impossible. to say much more. Sufficient to say that the piece went without a hitch, froin start to finish,
The Lilliputians again scored a huge success In the "Belle of New York." on Sunday even- ing. The theatre was crowded, and it was cer tainly quite one of the best things Hongkong has ever seen.
The charm of the evening was. Fifi Frecor (Miss Madge Williams); for such a small child her acting really was wonderful; in her songs every word is distinct and clear and, ber French accent excellent. The dancing through- out was very good indeed.
The part of the Father, acted; by Willie- Pollard, was very excellent, he is a clever comic actor. The little folks without doubt did their different parts with nerve, and skill; We hope to see them in many more picces

There was a good turnout of spectators and others at the Happy Valley on Saturday after noon. There was no important match on, but the milltary were engaged in a game or two, numbers. and their followers were in attendance to large The weather was favourable for football, being neither too hot nor, too sunny, and several fine individual efforts were in into the play, however, in any case, and it was if we win, we win, and if we lose, we don't
Recent researches have shown that, at least in the vast majority of cases, probably in all cases, the organism is introduced into the blood, and thus the disease contracted, by the bite of a mosquito, generally if not always, one species or other of the genus known as anopheles. The anopheles bites a malurious person,, a person whose blood contains the organism, and sucks up with the blood the. organism. This organism develops and in- creases in the body of the anopheles, and there produces germs, which pass into the salivary glands and proboscis of the insect. Hence when the mosquito bites another person, it introduces the organism into the blood of that person and so starts the disense.
Every individual anopheles is not necessarily infected with the organism, but in a district where malaria occurs, the probability is very great of any anopheles being so infected.""
Hence malaria, in the vast majority of cases, probably all cases, may be prevented, by preventing oneself from being bitten, by an infected anopheles.
Prevention may be secured....
1. By avoiding all bites of mosquitos..
A. By living in rooms to which the entrance of mosquitos is completely shut off by thịn meshed ganzes to windows, dears, &c.
B. By sleeping under adequate mosquito curtains the nnopheles generally bites in the night or evening," je
2. By avoiding sleeping or living near native huts in regions favpurable for malaria Although the natives begome acclimatised to the disease as they grow up, and the adults do not suffer from malarin, the organism is very frequent in the blood of native children, and anopheles in or near native huts are very commonly infected, Hence anyone who sleeps in or even near native. quarters runs, it a risk of being bitten by an infected anopheles a..d catching malaria.
3. By preventing matagious persons froma being bitten by mosquitos. A non-infected anopheles is harnless it is only when it has fed on blood of a malarious person that it can pro- pagate malaria.
