BADEN-POWELL AS A POET.
AN AMUSING FARODY.
The Rev. Canon Haig-Brown, who was master of Charterhouse School while Colonel Baden- Powell was a student there, has in his posses sion a parody on Longfellow's "The Psalin of Life by the hero of Mafeking, written for a bazaar in Cape Town just before he left there last year. Some of the verses show distinct signs of his remarkable humour. The parody
is as follows:--
Tell me not in accents dreary
That you think, bazaars a bese, That of crawol work you're weary,
And the rallies you abhor,
Cash is nedfut! Cash e scanly!
Arun efforts do nài grow! 1.

THE TRIBESMAN'S AMMUNITION, | Echang
There are lead-thieves as well as rifle thieves iu India, says the Pioneer of Allahabad, and there is but little to choose between the two classes as regards their boldness in carrying on their thefts. A few nights ago a sepoy ou sentry duty at Mardan was stabbed by a thief who find hopes of looting some lead from the store. Every regiment has to collect at short intervals all the bullets that can be found in the vile-butts, and this is carefully stowed away. So catelul are the Government in the matter of the disposal of lead that when it is sold it has to be shipped out of the country. It commands a good price across the North-West Frontier, where the tribesmen have often to
anufacture their ammunition, using old cart

ridge cases, which they can readily enough When the 303 rifles become the universal weapon for the
of garrison India, the illicit trade in lead will become very small, as the making of the metal- covered bullet will be beyond the ingenuity even of the skilled artizans about the" Kohat Pass. The Pathan who has a' Martini will still want lead, but he will find great difficulty, in obtaining it, and the lead-thieves will have to confine their attention to the auillary, who fire some thousands of shrapnel builds every year in practice, and collect a certain number from their ranges afterwards, but the source of sup- ply is not of much account. The, tribesman. who gets magazine rife will have to steal or buy his ammunition ready-made, and it will be interesting to see how much he will be able to get. Efforts are being made to prevent leak- age, but it is known that already there is a market for cartridges across the border, though the demand exceeds the supply.
RIFLE PRACTISE.
The following is from a letter of a correspon- dent in the Globe. We are not quite sure, however, if it is correct that no one but the landlord can object to a person shooting in his own garden. The letter says :---
There is an article in the National Review which is rather startling. It is en "Great Britain's debt to Japan," and it states that through April of this year, the whole Japanese fleet has been mobilised, with a considerable part of the Army. Manteuvres on a large scale took place in the Straits of Korea, arranged with a view to a Russian naval campaign, to which only the British Cominander-in-Chief on the China station was invited. On the day on which the British fleet steams out to battle," says the writer, "be that battle with Russia or France, then as a Japanese officer of distinc tion once told me, the Japanese fleet will also be let go." The Emperor of Japan was, he ads, the only sovereign who telegraphed to

THERAΡΙΟΝ.
This succesful and highly popular remedy, as employed in the Continental Hospitals by Ricord, Rostan, Jobert, Velpeau, and others, combines all the desiderats to be sought in a medicine of the kind, and surpasses everything hitherto employed.
THERAPION No. 1, in a few days only, removes all discharges from the urinary organs, effectually superseding injections, the use of which does irreparable harm by laying the foundation of stricture and other serious dis- Gates. In dysentery, piles, irritation of the lower bowel, cough, bronchitis, asthma, and some of the more-frying complaints of this kind, it will be found astonishingly efficacious affording prompt relief where other well-tried remedies have been powerless.
THERAPION No. 2, for impurity of the blood, scurvy, pimples, spots, blotches, pains and swellings of the joints, secondary symp
toms,
discase of the bones, sore throat, and all diseases for which it has been too much a fashion to employ mercury, sarsaparilla, &c., to the destruction of the sufferer's teeth and ruin of health. This preparation purifies the whole system through the blood, and throughly eliminates every poisonous matter from the body.
THERAPION No. 3, for nervous exhaustion, waste of vitality, and all the distressing con- sequences arising from early error, excess residence in hot, unhealthy climates, &c. It passtics surprising power in restoring strength and vigour to the debilitated.
THERAPION may be procured of the prin- cipal Chemists and Merchants throughout the world. Price in England 3/9 and 4/6. In order ing, the purchaser should state which of the three numbers he requires, and observe that the word "THERAPION" appears on the Govern ment, Stamp (in white letters on a red ground) affixed to every genuine package by order of Her Majesty's Hon. Commissioners, and with out which it is a forgery. The
