A special niecting of committee was held on the 16th May for consideration of the question, at which it was unanimously decided to reply that in their opinion it was undesirable to create sucli a mohopoly, and on the 10th idem a letter was addressed to the Government to that effect setting out the reasons for such decision, and suggesting that, instead, the boats now engaged in collecting ashes should be licensed.

AMOY AND THE FORMOSA TEA, TRADE, Read letter from British Legation, Tokyn, dated 8th May, acknowledging receipt of Cham ber's letter of 28th April addressed to Sir E. We leam that the Portuguese troops in Maçao are held ready for any emergency and that the Governor of that Colony has sent arnis and ammunition to Canton for the arming of the Portuguese residents of the City.

Mr. Watkins, of Messrs. Watkins, Limited, was a passenger to Taku by the failoong. We learn that he is taking up a considerable quan tity of stores, medicines and medical conforts generally and expects to do a roaring trade in the same at "Pifot Town, Taku. We have nò, doubt that bis enterprise will be greatly appre ciated both by the paval and military men now at the front.

Messrs, Schmidt and Company, are very busy just now. The whole of the European popula tion of Hongkong appears to be anxious to arm and guns, nitles and revolvers of all sizes and patterns are being sent in for overhaul and repair. Ammunition of all sorts is in great 'demand. By the way, we should like to know

Messrs. Basil Taylor and J. Thurburn were sworn in as incinbers of the Legislative Council.

The Bill entitled An Ordinance to farther amend the Magistrates Ordinance, 1890. (No. 10 of 1890) was real a third time and passed, as also was the Bill entitled an Ordinance to amend the Piers Ordinance, 1899.

A despatch froni the Government dated 22nd May, transmitting copy of a circular despatch covering correspondence regarding changes in the French Customs Tarifi, and inquiring if the Chamber desired to make any remarks on the subject was then considered. The com- mittee did not think many articles of importance were affected, and, as they did not imagine any thing they could say would have any appreciable effect, they did not propose to criticise the sug gested changes.

The Chairman then informed the Committee that during his recent visit to Peking he had had the privilege of discussing various matters with the British Minister, chief of which was the question of the Revision of the Tariff. THE "SHENGKING SEARCHED FOR CON- CEALED AMMUNITION. We learn from our Weihaiwei correspondent that the C. N. S. Shengking which arrived there on Saturday, was officially searched. This course was taken as the result of information from Shanghai that she carried ammunition from Tientsin, 100,000 rounds being the amount stated. Every facility was of course given by: Messrs., Butterfield and Swire for this search They were quite unaware that the Shengking carried anything of the sort. She left on the same day for Cliefoo, where she might have to discharge. A marine guard was placed on board to accompany her to Chefoo.
