We are now able to give further details concerning the case of pincy briefly men tioned in last night's issue. The launch in question, the Li Vike returned to the Harbour this morning at half-past six, and the following information is cleaned from the report matic by the Captain to the stated yesterday, the launch was attacked off Capsulman and after she had been boarded, junks which were in tow with her were cut away and the pirates made aff with her and her crew. They tooted her completely, taking g which the captain had on Board for pay and to in ourney and clothing, the property of ment of customs durs for the kerosene junks,

Thus Launch's crew.

The pirates hondol her for the Bogne Forts and A littleway past them held three une craft. The launch then made for a freshwater outlet called Tamsui, where they abandoned the launch and made off on a boat which was waiting for them there.

The extent of looting on the three other junks has not yet been astertained or is anything know about the fate of the kerosene junks. This case can certainly be put down as one of the most daring which has taken place recently and shews how well premeditated it has been. Considering the small distance from Hong kong at which it took place, is it necessary to remark on whom it casts reflection?

Naturally Sir Henry Blake, interested in the news of the last day or two although on a pleasure trip merely, is intensely from China, and he does not hesitate to admit that the situation is critical. An Imperial Edict was issued on Tuesday commanding the Boxers to be suppressed, as they were acting as rebels in violating the law and destroying public property. Though more strongly worded than former Edicts of the kind it is noticeable that it still cuntains no con- demnation of the Boxers, but merely of the

"reckless braves" who have joined their ranks, Many stories were corrent to the effect that the landing of the U. S. Marines on Tuesday even- ing was objected to. It appears however, that the message of enquiry to the Traffic Manager being somewhat long in reply, and the officer in charge being anxious to have his men settled Taku Tug lighters to waiting at Tangku Station. SILK WORMS IN JAVA.

Near Tangerang, not far from Batavia, is a sugar estate called Pangkallan managed by an educated Chinaman named Lee Kin Liong. manager determined to try silk production, and started by, reading books on that line of business in European languages. He then experimented successfully with mulberry cul- ivation. The next step was the procuring of silk worms' eggs from China. Worms were hatched and readily devoured the Java-grown mulherry leaves. Then Lee Kim Liong studied books from France, containing drawings and descriptions of silk-spinning establishments. Working upon this data, he, through Chinese and native carpenters, fitted up an establishment. to work with forty spindles, fitted with aTM petroleum motor. The cost was only one fifth. of what the establishment would cost in Europe. The silk turned out was good in quality Lea Kim Liong has succeeded when a scientist, the late Dr. Teysmann, bad failed. Dr. Teysmann at Buitenzorg, had often, but always- unsuccessfully, experimented with silk-worm rearing. Now that Lim Kim Liong has shown that this branch of industry can be profitably pursued in Jiva, it is expected that others will follow his lead. He has shown that silk- spinning is a success in the lowlands of Java and is likely to prove more paying than the cultivation of Liberia coffee.—Straits Times.
