BOER RECRUITING METHODS,

LORENZO MARQUES, May 1st. That the Boer agents on the Continent stoop to fraud in the attempt to inveigle recruits into the Transvaal military service is shown by the story told by a simple-minded Teuton who. arrived in the Heraby

In conversation with a compatriot be confessed that his sole mutive in going to the 'Transvant was a promise that he would receive 1 a day during the war and a free grant of a farm when. the war was over. Moreover, he was assured that within a few weeks the Boers would be completely victorious, so that he had barely time to quality for the grant. When he arrived here and was informed that there was no pro- spect of securing either £1

a day or a farm he seemed much erafallen.

It is to be feared that hundreds who have been similarly dehuded will at the end of the war find themselves stranded, without money, occupation, or friends, Arriving in the Trans. vool with Fittle money, such men have no alter native but to accept service without pay in the

Boer forces.

THE SHOOTING FATALITY AT ESQUIMALT.

Lugers. m the Pacific Station give further particulars of the death of Lieut. R. D. Scott, of the heasant, gunboat, who was shot by sentry at the darkyd at Esquimalt on the night of April 6. Lient Scott was the officer of the watch, and about midaght went ashore for the purpose of inspecting the guard. In con- sequence of tamins of Fenian outrages, the gord has of late been doubled, and, orders have been given to senties to fire «, blank car- tridge if their challenge is not answered. It is

stated that Lieut. Scott was challenged by the scutay, and that instead of answering the chat- lenge the officer begun to run, Higgins, the Sentry, fixed two snuts, both of which tool effect. The sentry was placed under anest and was to be tried by Court-martial. Some question is said to have bega raised as to whether it is the

duty of the naval officers to include the naval yard in their tour of inspection, seeing that all the guard and santry duty on land, including that of the naval yard, is performed by the Artillery.

FATAL ACCIDENT AT THE PARIS

EXHIBITION.

PARIS, April 29th.

A lamentable accident took place this after mon just amside the Exhibition. At the ex tremity of the Avenug Suffren a foot bridge of wood and cement had been constructed by the proprietors of the Globe Céleste" to connect with the Exhibition. The bridge passed over that avenue and over the Quai d'Orsay, but had not yet been thrown open to the public, nur had the woodwork frame supporting it been removed, M. Picard, the Commissioner General, did not consider the bridge strong enough to bear a throng of pedestrians, and M. Bunel, the municipal architect, had for -hidden the removal of the woodwork. This operation was nevertheless proceeded with this afternoon just as a crowil.of people not visiting the exhibitions, were passing or standing under the bridge. The last stroke had been given for the removal of the woodwork when the bridge fell in, burying the people beneath under a mass of beams and plaster.

There was a scene of terrible confusiun, and the victims uttered heartrending cries. Some workmen employed in the neighbourhood, with same policemen and soldiers, hurried to the spot and began trying to extricate the victims, but for some minutes there was nobody to take the command. Presently, however, firemen with all their applia ces arrived, and the work of clearing away the ruins began. The crushed body of a girl seven years old was first found. Five other bodies were then discovered. A soldier had his leg fractured and several other persons were in jured. A cyclist had his machine crushed, but himself just escaped. M. Lépine, Prefect of Police, promptly arrived on the spot, and M. Loubet sent one of his military household to ascertain the extent of the disaster. The pain fui sensation created among the visitors to the Exhibition, and afterwards among the public, may be imagined. M. Picard at once counter manded the brass band concerts which bad been announced, for to-night,

The work of clearing away the wreckage has been proceeding all the evening. Two more deaths have occurred, bringing the total up to eight, and several of the injured are in an alarming condition.- Times.

A COWBOY TYPE DEVELOPED.

Dr. Conan Doyle contributes to the Friend of the Free State a picturesque description of the British infantry. He says!

"Who could have conceived, that had seen this prim soldier in time of peace, that he could so quickly transform himself into this grim, virile barbaring? Bull-dog faces, hawk faces, hungry wolf faces, every sort of face except a weak one. Most of them have swarthy faces, and lean a little forward, with eyes steadfast and Hopkins, Miss features impassive but resolute. Here isa clump.
