Japanese in Vancouver. A Vancouver correspondent states that the continued immigration of Japanese labourers is causing something very like a panic in the country among white workers and settlers. They are invading and gradually monopolising all forms of industry. Farm work has now claimed their attention, and Lord Aberdeen's manager at Coldstream, near Vernon, has just engaged a number of them. They seem to promise, well, and, of course, their rate of remuneration is low. Men from the old country are humorously remarking that perhaps they may help to solve the problems of agricultural depression at home. The danger is real to this country, for Mongol immigration into British Columbia now exceeds the white settle ment, a state of affairs which cannot be per mitted to continue. It is hoped that friendly overtures from Ottawa may induce Japan to limit the emigration of her subjects, who are now still arriving in thousands.

Indeed the vault of Heaven were hermetically sealed. It is virtually nine months now since last rain, and I believe for the last twenty years nothing like such a serious drought has been experienced. The Massacre then, it will be remembered was preceded by just such weather, and within 48 hours after the slaughter of the 23 foreigners it rained in torrents for days. This unfortunately apparently established the efficacy of the crime, though it probably sased the lives of the remaining residents. The bridegroom instantly removed the burning drapery, and the bride, who behaved with fine presence of mind, merely suffered a slight singeing of the hair. The Naval Brigade,

On and ulto, the Naval Brigade which covered itself with glory in the defence of Ladysmith was reviewed by the Queen at Windsor. Her Majesty maintains an unabated interest in her gallant soldiers and sailors. It was by her special command that Capt. Hedworth Lamb. ion and the men of the Powerful proceeded from Portsmouth to Windsor, and were drawn up for her inspection in the great Quadrangle. The Queen looked with unconcealed interest at the "handy men" made familiar to us in, the dispatches of Sir George White-who was himself amongst the witnesses of the spectacle. The Brigade received the Queen with a Royal salute. As Her Majesty drove up and down the line, Captain Hedworth Lambton walked by her side, and the Queen was follow- ed by the Duke of York and Prince Louis of Battenberg. Returning to the saluting base, the distinguished party was joined by Sir George White, and the march past took place, a twelve-pounder gun and twa Maxims being in the rear. From all leam am now inclined to endorse this view. 1. be lieve he knows sufficient about foreign powers to realize how wild and irrational is the Government idea of driving out, and he knows that any frantic attempt on their port can only result in ignominious defeat. If the Chinese, drive us to action, it would result in the Emperor being restored, and the Empress power suppresset for ever. He, as the one who had remained neutral, or

perhaps actively assisted the Powers, would stand the best possible chance of being placed at the licad of affairs. Watch this and sec.

The French Admiral bas arrived and gone to Peking, but the 19Entretasteaux has not re- mained at Taku. She has probably gone to Chingwantao owing to the low water at Taku. The French Minister and Admiral were con- ferring yesterday as to the desimbility of landing troops. I hear that the French, American and British Ministers have made further representa- tions to the Tsungli Yamen about the Boxers, but the Government declare themselves power less to cope with the Boxers now, though they promise to issue another proclunation. Yet they feel equal to driving out the foreign nations!

as the sick-were concomed, he thought, that, there were two plagues in South Africa--the plague of flies and the plague of wonen. The lies they could get rid of by means of horsehair wisps and other appliances, and the flies departed at night, but those women-the women mentioned in Sir Alfred Milner's pro- clamation-were really and absolutely a terror. They came out in the guise of amateur nurses; they took up the time of the officers; and, con sidering the war we were engaged in and the lives we lost, the picture of a number of slabomtely dressed ladies, masquerading in summer costumes and arranging picnics, was really a blot on the campaign.

A Huge Forest Fire. A forest fire of such extent as has hitherto never been seen before in Germany, has been raging in the province of Hanover, near the town of Culle, where an area of over 5,000 acres of fine forest was laid bare by the destruc tive clement. It was only by the prompt help of a battalion of infantry and pioneers at Celle, that the destruction did not spread much further, as an area of 100,000 acres was endangered. If the military help had arrived ten minutes later, the fine country and hunting seat of Mr. Locsener, of Hamburg (partner of Robert, M. Sloman and Co.) would also have been destroyed.
