Only the other day it was announced that the Légation Guard was to be withdrawn from Peking, but the Authorities luckily thraught better of it at the last moment. Our Corespondent has been accused, we, believy, of crying "wall" but in the face of the telegram that we publish elsewhere we do not think thatany one will refuse to admit that his warnings have been well founded.
Our readers will doubtless ask how it is that the fist news of disturbances should have come from our Shanghai and bot from our Tientsin Corresponiteit? This is easily explaine Telegrains from Tientsin have in come over the Chinese lines and when- ever there happens to be any trouble on foot they are liable to great delay. Our Tientsin telegrams have at times taken as much as from four to six days to reach us and thus it is only too probable than a full account of the outbreak is now on the way to us and will, should the Chinese Authorities see it

LABUAN NOTES.
(From Our Own Correißondent.)
LABUAN, May 15th.
I have only time for a few lines to confirm my messages of 29th April, 2nd, 3rd, 4th and roh May. Kudat and the coast ports are quiet in the meanwhite, but Gagtian, Gaya and Am- bang expect to be attacked at any moment. The discontent is general, even into the interior, and no wonder when one remembers how the
natives are squeezed by the Chartered Com. pany. Even here the Europeans are fearful of in attack, but it is ridiculous even to suppose that any one of the native leaders would be 100 enough to attack Labuaa and run the risk of getting cut off from the mainland, The official version of affairs is that the constabulary are pursuing the enemy and hope to cut off their retreat-in reality a hopeless hope. T should not be surprised to hear of a raid on -Tambunan as I am told the Resident there is
much disliked by the natives.
