MAUSER BULLETS “BURN.”

THE HONGKONG TELEGRAPH, MONDAY, MAY 28, 1900.

CAPE VISITORS NOT WANTED.

A WARNING TO GLOBE TROTTERS.

The following telegram frost Sir A. Milner has been issued by the Colonial Office --

The number of visitors to South Africa is constantly increasing, and includes many, especially ladies, who seem to have no parti cular call of duty or business.

am sure this would not be the case if it was realized at home that visitors who, at ordinary times, would be most welcome, mas, under existing circumstances be a source of serious inconvenience, interfering with the work of military and civil officers and putting a strain on our limited means of accommodation, which are urgently required for those who have duties to perform here, or who are invalided from the

front.

I think that many whop coming here is prompted by nothing more than a general interest in the war, would elect to stay at home if they knew that their presence was a hin- drance rather than a help. For persons travel- ing merely for health or recreation, and above all for ladies so travelling, no place could be less suitable at the present inonent than South Affica.

The special war Enrrespondent of the British. The considerable increase in the expense of Medical Farmal writes curious case of living, at all times very high, which is caused

by the excessive influx of visitors, is a hard | possible ben from a bullet was shown in a wound recensed by" corporal in the Queen's ship on persons of the latter class who may

There was a little irregularity of the bone, and a fi gment may have been displaced Close to the exit wound was a mark resembling

The bullet was not a ricochet in appssurance. ather patient gave a somewhat similar account. In this hist.nue the bullet entred one inch to the right side of the eighth dorsal spine, and made its exit three inches below the clavicle on the same side without traversing the thoracic cavity. The ballet dropped inside the shirt and bang the skin. The bullet was fond inside the rites a day or live later. Such ac counts have to be received with a certain attheunt of caution, but undoubtedly the mark on the skin of the abdomen, did resemble a

Coloured lenses simply dull the sunlight and make the vapour a litle more visible, but so little as to make the observation of no practical ore. Messrs. Short and Mason, in their turn, applied to the Oriance College at Woolwich, and were in formed that the lenses were of no advantage for the purpose indicated."

MRS. LANGTRY'S ORDEAL.

Mrs. Langtry, who has been touring the Laited States with "The Degenerates," is taking a short rest at New York, and trying to recover from the unpleasant treatment she revently experienced,"

In the course of an interview Mrs, Langtry de lared that her play, although perfectly moral, deverly written, beautifully staged, and well presented, had been vindictively assailed through the country, while she herself, bad been subjected to every kind of insult.

"These insults," she said, "have not stopped at my professional work. My personal character has been on to shreds. Lies, too boldly false andpitably weak to be refuted, have filled nearly every newspiper in the land. Why have been subjected to these inselts? What have I done?

"I attribute the outburst largely to the change able, capricious American public-applauding to-day, hissing to marrow; it is also largely due 10 Antericais partisan politics.

My recitation of 'The Absent-minded Beg- gar in aid of the South African Hospital Fund aroused an intensely hitter feethig. In Ameri can partisan politics, the wounded Briton deserved neither aid når pity..

The German Oriental Society have heard from the director of the Babylonish excavations, Dr. Koldewey, that three gates have been dis-Henderson, Miss L. covered, besides a ennal built with Aramean bricks, which is supposed to be the long-sought for East Canal, so often mentioned in inscrip tions. A temple called" Einach ofthe Goddess Ninniach has been laid bare, the stones bearing inscriptions, dating from the time of Nebuchadnezzar, and it is worthy of special notice that, though all the excavators disermann, J. coveries date from or before the reign of Nebuchadnezzar, yet little or nothing has come to light that can be attributed to the anterior times of Sardanapalus,

She recently refused to appear at Newark, in New Jersey, where the mayor had actually proposed that the company should play before a jury of butchers and grocers acting as dramatic censors.

This succesful and highly popular remedy, as employed in the Continental Hospitals by Ricord, Rostan, Jobert, Velpeau, and others, combines all the desiderita to be sought in a medicine of the kind, and surpasses everything hitherto employed.

THERAPION No. 1, in a few days only, removes all discharges from the urinary organs, effectually superseding injections, the use of which does irreparable harm by laying the foundation of stricture and other serious dis cases. In dysentery, piles, irritation of the lawar bowel, cough, bronchitis, asthma, and some of the more trying complaints of this kind, it will be found astonishingly efficacious affording prompt relief where other well-tried remedies have been powerless,
