The result was that the circuit of electricity was establisher, and poor cobie fell from bis lofty perclas deat as Julius Caesar.

THE ROTHSCHILD BEQUEST TO

THE BRITISH MUSEUM.

དག་ཆ་པ...

Baron Ferdinand de Rothschild, when, he died, in December, 1898, bequeathed in the British Museum the plate, enamels, hijuterie, earrings in boxwood, inajolica, glass, arms and armour, and other articles specified in a catalogue attached to the will, comprising the peTncipal works of art in the new smoking-room it Waddesdon, subject to the condition that they should be honsed separately from the other contents of the Museum. The trustees, while delighted to accept the collection of a man whose enthusiasm in such matters was not hedged about by mere considerations of pounds, shillings, and pence, were placed in some little dilemma. How were they to fulfil the condition of n separate roon), seeing that the Masenm was already wch filled How Lever the difficulty has been surmounted, What used to be the Roman room, and is approaches trom the top of the grand staircase, through the Anglo Saxam rooni, bus heen en over to the new treasures. THE BOURGOGNE" CASE.

After the sinking of die French Steamer Bourgogne by collision with the British ship Cromartysire, the French Tribunal of Com 'merce cóndenmed the Transatlantic Company to pay daninges in the relatives of passengers who were drowned. We lean"from the Shif ping that the Appeal Court reversed the entire judgment of the Tribunal of Commerce It held that Captain Delonche was free from ali blame, as he was above all culegiums, for the person of a glorious death met at the post of honour, and, worthy of the mission that devolved on the captain, of the self-denial of his officers, of the courage of his men, and of the records of the French navy, Captain Delontle there. fore committed no fault after the collision, and the company was not more responsible on that than on the other aus. The Court squished the judgment of the Tribunal of Commerce. declared that the documents, circumstances, and pleadings show that the Transatlantic Com pany committed no fault involving liability : that Captain Deloncle and his subordinates

responsible for the nets of some foreign pas- committed na tasit: that the company was not sengers who seized on one of the brats; and ¦ that the catastrophie on July 4, 4898, must be attributed with all its muisequences to a case of force majeure, for which the shipowner is not responsible.

The new Waldesdon Manor room is very interesting indeed, Many of the objects are. of priceless value, and one has ever before one the consideration that year by year it becomes. increasingly difficult even for the very wealthy in gather these things. The period of the greater pait of the collection is the later dazzling Renaissance, and characteristics of airliness of tone and splend our. There affeally only four classical ex- amples. Two are of the most perfect Greek work-beautiful heads, in light, reticf, of Bacchaples wreathe with ivy leaves. They form really handles of a litter, and are circular medallions th Jonse Among a series of cups al washs hollowed out of bird stonesy date, vase of very curious workingnships. The Mekong gives some details of shocking crime committed near Saigon about the begin ning of this month. Some five or six Aunamie children of ages ranging from 9 to 12 were out in the fields herding buffaloes. They seized one of their uumber, tied him to a branch of a bamboo tree, and then having thus put hits in rock crystal bears the name of Akbar on a spit, roasted him alive," apparently by lighting a fire under him. When the little child was rescued. he was not quite dead, but his body was one horrible wound, carbonised in places, and cut and bleeding in others, The other children have been arrested, but apparent ly, there is no explanation of so revolting crime, beyond the natural conclusion that they must be little sayages.

A NEW ATLANTIO LINER. Those who are contemplating the passage of the Atlantic will be interested in the following extract from the London Shipping World

The new Cunard passenger and cargo steamer Ivernia, which has been built by Messrs. Swan and Hunter, I.d.. Wallsend-on-Tyne, ran her trials on zath of March. This ship is the third largest steamer jet built, so far as gross tan- nage is concerned, being only exceeded by the Oceanic and Kaiser Wilhelm der Grosse in Capacity for cargo she is probably the largest steamer aflent, and it is intended by the Cunard Company that the vernia shall leave for New York on Saturday, 14th of April, filling up the vacancy which is caused by the employment of the Umbria e transport 10 South Africa Her accommodation and equipment are of the most perfect kind, and the vessel. represents the latest effort of shipbuilding science in large passenger and freight accommodation. The following are, the dimensions of the vessel Length, 600 ft beam, 64 h. pin., depth to shelter deck, 49 ft 6 in: gross tonnage, 13,800 tous not lonnage, 8,913 tone,

There are some superb specimens of the goldsmith's art among the jewels The Lvte jewel (No... 167) stands out with great prominence. It is an oval pendant containing a miniature portrait of James The enamelling is most delicate and brilliant

The story of this jewel is told by Mr. Read, keeper of the department of British and media. val antiquities, in his scholarly notes on the collection. James was so fattere by a pedigree that Mr. Lyte had produced in which, with the supremest art of the courtier, he made

to appear that the King had descended from Best, that he gave his subject. this trinket. It came ultimately by purchase into the Hamilton Palace collection; and Lord Rothschild bought it at the sale for £1,835, The enamels, generally, well repay study; they belong almost without exception to the later Limoges school. Antong the wood carvings arc soine, striking English specimens which may well excite our der nowadays, not only on account of their design, but for the execution

extraordinary patience and skill allied to the feeling of the artist. The microscopic carving in boxwood is a miracle of detail. There are few glass vessels of a rare character. One is a silver goblet, with richly enamelled figures. The story is that it was won at play from a King of France. The metal work is also interesting the drinking cups and the old-weapons. It is, indeed, entirely a collection to be enchained and it will prove one of the most attractive rooms of the Museum,.
