(Signed) F. H. MAY,

Acting Colonial Secretary, Limewashing,

The Chief Inspector of Nuisances reports:- The Western District period is now? current and to date only a very small proportion of the houses have been notified, but it is the intention of owners to cleanse (some roo or so). This has in a measure beep fortunate, in that it has allowed the Inspector time for the prosecution of Central District defaulting owners. There are still a large number of summonses to be heard during the next few days, probably about zoo. In addition to the above prosecutions, there have been to date in connection with Kowloon property, 58 prosecutions resulting in fines to the amount of $580.00 being inflicted.

It is hoped that when the period for the Western District ends there will be only, at most, a very small proportion of prosecutions

Bank Buildings,

May tolli, 1900

Not for a number of years have the inhabit ants of Hongkong been treated to the sight of trooping the Colours, an old military custom that has been observed since the time our army first had a recognised standing in the country. For some reason, probably because it gave place to the more novel spectacle, the ordinary Queen's Birthday evolution, the firing of the feir ferjoit, was dispensed with, and trooping the colours took its place. Before the days of advancing in skirmishing order, by which the fighting, line often covers miles, the Colours were the rallying point for the regiment, leading it on to victory or inspiring hope when forced required. to retire. We believe, that now, the coloursG are not taken into action, but still they are not guarded less zealously, as it is on them the names of former triumphs have been written, and the battles in which the present generation is engaged will be inscribed as a lesson and guide for succeeding incinbers of the regument to follow. With these few remarks it can be GOVERNMENT NOTIFICATION,--ÑO: 264 seen how essential it is that the Colours should",
