RABIES IN TOKYO.

The Japan Times reports that a rabid dog has made its appearance in the capital. During the 3rd and the 4th inst three boys in Negishi were bitten by a dog, which was afterwards found to belong to Mr. E. Maveno of the same place in Shilay The dog was soon taken to the Shitaya Folice Station, where, on a fost mortem examination being carried out, it was ascertained that it was suffering from rabies. Meanwhile another mad dog appeared in Shinagawa a day or two after, but was taken to the Shinagawa Police Station before it had attacked any of the passers-by.

A SUSPICIOUS CHARACTER. About seven o'clock on the 7th inst, reports the Japan Chazette, a foreigner, who entered the compound of the military magazine at Meguro, Ebara district, Tokyo, by climbing the fence, was discovered, by one of the guards of the magazine. He was at once. arrested and handed over to the police. After sone inquiry at the police station the foreigner, an American named Andreis (21), stated that he set of fron Kebe about two weeks age and came up in Tokyo, zid Yokohama, on the 7th inst.. and that he lost his way, with the result above men tioned. The palice, however, recognised him to be a suspicious character, and handed him over for examination to the Shiba Police Station. He is tall, has a long fare, und dresses in sciled clothes. Only one sen. was discoved in his' pastrasinek.

THE CROWN PRINCE OF GERMANY. ་་་་་ཡིན་ན་ In the Clown Prince of Germany, whose majority has just been celebrated, a London paper writes:---

The mask of finding a wife for the Grown Prince of Germany, is not easy. Among the lesser royal families of Oldenburg, Weimar or Anhalt, me might be found with no great dif culty, were it not against the interests of the ruling house of Prussia to choose a wife within its own borders, Anather difficulty is that the Hobenlerus, who are Lutherans, abject to marying a wife from a Roman catholic court. There are, therefore, only three courts in which a triageable princess may be found-the British, the Swedish and the Dutch. Queen Wilhelmina would please Emperor William best as a bride for his son. Negotiations with this end in view have long been going forward het ween Holland and Germany, and the cm. peror and empress found it convenient on their im from England last year to pay a friendly visit to the young green of Helland and her other. Shal, this alliance be brought about, it, would not be the first connection between the houses of Hohenzollern, and Orange. The consort of Frederick, the first king of Prussia, was a girincess of Orange, who is simply known as the friend and protector of the great philosopher, Licbaitz

The young crown prince has been trained to speak several languages freely, especially Eng. hala in spite of fluency, however, he prefers his native tongue, and dislikes his grand- mother's babit of always addressing her child- ren and grandchildren in the language of her own country. The German empress speak: English, but with the strong accent of one whi bas learned it merely as an accomplishment, and has not been taught to speak it like her husband, from her childhood. She has made little effort to improve her accent, not Fery being an ambitinus woman. but preferring to shine in a small circle of friends. These friends are chosen chicly for their pious devotion to the Lutheran faith, and the afternoon circle of tea drinkers which often surrounds her majesty Is largely composed of missionaries and their wives.

COOLIE LIFE IN FIJI..

Life in Fiji appears to be popular with the Indian coole, since, out of a tou! Indian population of over twelve thousand, nearly eight thousand, according in the last official report to hand, are coolies who have stayed on aher completing the five years for which they were originally shipped. Their prosperity is testified to by the fact that, during the twelve months, they were enabled to deposit £16,000 in the local bank, besides buying a good deal of property in land and houses and sending nearly 2,000 in relatatives in India; while in one district alone 13,000 tons of sugarcane were grown, on their own account, by the time expired canties. These figures are the more striking as the report states that the majority of the time expired coolies prefer starting a homestead for themselves to continuing plantation work.

REPORTED, TO BE IN SINGAPORE

The Boston Weekly Journal of Friday, April 6th, has a series of peculiar statements as to the whereabouts of Aguinaldo. We do not say that Aguinaldo is not, or was not, in Singapore, but we are quite sure that he has not had communication with the Straits Times, nor has

the Colt has been freely advertised of late, and is now undergoing its trials. It is a lighter gun than the Maxim, and when used, with Lord Chotermol, K. A. J.. Dundonald's light galloping carriage should Cumming, Miss H. have a use in the field; but we confess a lean-Cohen, J. A. ing to the well-tried and trusted Maxim, so long as the ammunition is high class. The naw 37 mm. has given us a better taste of its powers at Spion Kop, where it poured out its -pounder sicil at the rate of 300 per minute. Fortunately there were only 25 rounds in a bélt, so it gives a few seconds interval till the next belt is fixed. I trust we may soon have our guns out there, with plenty of ammunition, for they are very voracious. The limbers on the field carriages for these guns carry 12 belts, and these could be fired in under two minutes. It is essentially a emergency weapon.
