** TERRIBLE” MENU,

I the menu of a dinner given, by the 2nd Irish Fusiliers to the Naval Brigade, after the mince pies yddite) came the list of wines, which were all labelled with titles complimen tary to the guests. Chimpagno Forte and pop Terrible were followed by Irish whisky Powerful. The menu ought, says the Globe, to supply wine merchants with several happy suggestions Khaki sherry would be sure to Bell.

MR. WILLIAM BIBBY,

We greatly regret to hear, says the SF. Press of and inst., that a telegrun was received from Kuala Lumpor yesterday morning, to the effect that Mr. Bibby's condition was practically hope Jess. Another telegram was received in the, evening to the effect that Mr. Bibby was' "sinking fast." Sullat it seems we have to fear the worst. Up till the hour of going to press, no further telegram had been received to-day from Kuala Lumpor. Two of Mr. Bibby's sons are with their father just now.

PRESERVED PINEAPPLES. Quantities of canned pines," as they are called in the trade, are now being unloaded in the London docks, and many hundreds of thousands of tins containing this fruit preserved in syrup are in the hands of dealers.

Something like 5,000,000 "pines" are ex- ported annually from Singapore, the bulk com- course, to the United Kingdom. The cultivation and exportation of this fruit are mostly carried on by Chinese.

of

is nothing for the firms engaged in the trade to prepare 10,000 "pines in a day. The fruits are partly pared, and the juice with which they are surrounded is made from partly. ripened pipes, sweetened with white Java sugar. When the tins inve been tested they are put up in cases carrying twenty-four tins each.

Some retail traders in England: take the "pines" out of their tins, and by a simple process turn them into a preserve, which is sold at about double the price of the canned fruit. Put up in glass jars, the preserve obtains a ready sale.

BIG WINDFALL FOR PARIS.

It is officially announced that the charities of Paris will benefit to the extent of about a million and a half sterling under the will of the late flamuess Hirsch. This is a larger soar than had been originally anticipated.

56 HUSSAR" ETYMOLOGIZED.

A word as to the origin of the term "hassar." It is a word which long puzzled the delvers in etymology. One of the aid dictionary-makers marle the very wild guess that hussars were so called "from the huzza, or shout, they give at the first charge." The generally received ex- planation used to be that the Magyar "buszar" was derived from "husz," twenty, and ar," price. And to explain this it was related that when King Mathias in 1958 raised his Grst hussars, he called upon his nobles to provide so many horsemen, and they, in turn, obliged each twenty houscheiders to equipa huszar. But unfortunately for this.story there is not the slightest historial proof of any such action upon the part of the Hungarian nobles. Dr. Murray happily reached the end of his labours upon the letter H not many months ng, and we las solved the problem. The word is derived by a roundabout route from the Italian cassaro,"

corsair so that the original bussar was simply a free-booter, a

free-lance.
