BOXING COMPETITIONS.
Perhaps these excited the greatest, interest and were splendidly contested, more especially the heavy weights, in which both competitors were fine specimens of the British soldier. The interest was further, augmented by the fact that Hughes, had twice before defeated Smart, but it was claimed by the latter's ad- vocates that he had not then been in a fit
condition, while now he was the pink of per- fection. Undoubtedly he was the favourite and when they stripped looked the heavier and stronger man, but flughes had slightly the advantage in height and length of reach, and eventually won by the superiority of his lead offs, but, as will be seen by the number of points gained by cach, the competitors were well matched.
