Late in December two Swedish Steamers left New York with 2,500 tons of internal fixings, the fast instalments for the United States Government cold storage now being erected in Manila. The building will be 145 feet square, two stories high, and will be surmounted by a tower-like chimney equalling the Statue of Liberty mounted upon a large glass globe, The feature of the structure, will be an system to extend four miles. The elevator with its 2,400 pounds lifting capacity, as well as most of the other appliances in the building, will be operated by electricity. In fact the mechanism that of the different systems is so complete a ship at a nearby pier will have only to open her hatches and her cargo will be trans. ported to the storage almost automatically. The structure itself will cost in the neighbour. hood of half a million dollars, exclusive of the cost of proposed fountains and landscape gard ening on the grounds. It is estimated that the warehouse will take in 1,100 tons of beef, 200 tons of mutton, so tons of butter, 100 tons of in other potatoes, and too tons of bacon; words, suficient food to feed an army of 10,000 soldiers for three months. In addition to the ordinary freezing apparatus there will be an ice plant with a daily output of 200 tons. The power in the building is to be furnished by three 200 horsepower engines..
which will be illuminated erlend tracking. Andrado

THE FAMINE IN INDIA,
An Indian contemporary says. "The famine is steadily growing in intensity, and the weekly summary of the position is not reasur- ing. The strain has, to a slight extent, been relieved by the welcome rains in Northern India, but these have been powerless to produce alleviation of the general situation, or to stem the tide of misery and destitution. The numbers on relief, the best indication of the severity of the distress, continue to swell, and
the total has jumped up the appalling aggregate of four millions.
MR. KIPLING AND BRITISH GUIANA.
Mr. and Mrs. Rudyard Kipling left England. on Saturday for for South Africa. Before going the novelist sent the following message to the British Guiana branch of the Navy League, which had sent 2.000dols, to the Transvaal War Fund: "Bravo! British Guiana. Seeing what they have had to contend with lately in the sugar line, they have done uncommonly well. Please convey to them my best thanks (a) as a vice-presdent of the league, and (b) as perpetra tor of The Absent-Minded Beggar,' and (c) as A fellow contributor to big Jack-pot which we're boiling on Thomas's behalf."-London Letter, Jan. 20.1

For instance, a bath of twenty-four hours duration in ordinary water, however stagnant and inviting to the average bacillus, is fatal to the influenza microbe, while on the other hand it will exist for weeks in perfect blies in human saliva.
The modus operandi of the influenta microbe is peculiar. It is not the microbe itself that does the harm, but, a poisonous liquid it excretes. A measure of consolation is afforded by the fact that this poison is even more deleterious to the microbe than to the human: being in whom it is deposited, for the microbes. and by being destroyed by their own horrible exhalations, whereas thein victim, of coume,
