HOW PRETORIA IS DEFENDED. Considerable interest, attaches to a des cipton of the defenses of Pretoria, which, perording to fugam, are of the most modern description and formidable in their complete.

NESS.

hey consist of five powerful forts and five unes of mines and enormous entrenchments with redoubts, the mines being an laid as to cover all the approaches to the principal points of of the defense. The centre of the system forts lies about 200 yards to the west ward of the northern end of Pretoria, and has a radius of something more than 7,000 yards. The centre of the city itself is only about 3,800

nearly die sauth, from the fort on signal hill, which is about 400 feet above the plain on the west side of the railway to fohannesburg, and about 4,000 yards from the fort on the bill to the east of the rail- way, and the Aupies river running to the north. Between this fort and the river are the fountains that furnish the water supply of Pretoria. The distaned between the forts on either side of the railway is 2,702 yards. The railway station where the lines froin Johannesburg on the south, Delagon bay on the east, and Pietersburg in the north form their June- tion, is immediately outside the city on the south side. The railway to Pietersburg after winding some distance to the westward passes out of the plain on which Pretoria is situated, through the Daspoort or defile in the range of hills behind the city, through which also the Aupies river runs, the railway and river running together across the plain through the Winderboom. Poort, under the guns of a large fort 7,100 yards, and a little to the eastward of

Pretoria. from the Leture of

The western niest fort is on the range of hills behind Pretoria, and lies at a distance of 10,300 yards from the centre of the city. The power ful redoubt to the southwest of Pretoria 3800 yards from the centre of the city, on the range of hills through which the transport road to Johannesburg pa ses, completes the circle of the larger works defending the Boer capital. Behind this redoubt are the principle magazines, one excavated out of the solid rack with a bomb-proof roof, and the other built into the kloop, als Lab-proof. Communication be tween the recoil and the last mentioned nagazine is by means of covered way. Roads connect all these forts with the capital, and the have pipes laid for water, as well as electric cables for the search lights.

The number of guns mounted on the fort? and redoubts is said to be 120 of large calibre and quick-firing of different kinds. It is stated that some of the guns are 23 centimenters calibre, but this is doubtful; it is known, however, that there are a number of 15 Creusot works and of lung ange, as has been shown, ly their performances at Ladysmith. Among the others there are Krupps, Maxims and other machine, and quick-firing guns, -

The fonts are open to the rear toward Pretoria, and are of masonry heavily faced with earth toward the open country, On the east side of the circle of defense there was no regular fort when høstifties began, but it is probably that since then the rise to the eastward of the city, by which the railway to Delagoa bay runs, has been fortified.

THRÉE AMERICANS MURDERED.

NEW YORK, March 1st. Telegraphic advices were received in this city yesterday giving news of the murder of three Americans in the town of Guaymas, Re- public of Mexico, on February 22nd, Wash ington's Birthday. It appears that in a spirit of patriction on the anniversary of the birth of the Father Our Country," they hoisted the stars hp of above the Mexican fag over their houses,. A mob soon gathered, and tried to tear down the starry banner, and a general riot followed, during which three Americans were killed.

The United States Minister of Foreign Affairs has demanded an explanation from the Government of Mexico, and the families of the deceased will vigorously prosocute claims for indemnity, which Mexico will undoubtedly grant fanila Times.

The siege train just slipped from England for South Africa, presumably for Pretoria, is the second sent out during the last forty-six years. The last occasion was whea sixty-five heavy guns and mortars were sent from Woolwich for the siege of Sebastopol, where with fifty ship guns, they took part in the bombard ment of that city in conjunction with the French siege imin. The Russian defense, y, Miss N. G. however, developed so rapidly under the inspiration of Todleben, that befure the final assault which placed it in the hands of the allies, the number of guns, in position in the besieging batteries had been raised to fos, The train now on its way out from England com prises thirty howitzers, fourteen of 8 inch calibre, eight of 5-inch, and eight of 4-inch. The number is not formidable in itself under. the old conditions in regard to explosives, but if they are, as may be inferred, intended to throw lyddite shells, it is an exceedingly for midable armament, and, unless the Boers are in possession of projectiles charged with melinite or some simliar high explosive with which to respond to the British fire, the siege of Pretoria should not be of very long duration. It is calculated that the investment will require fully 42.000 British troops, leaving the remain. der of the army to guard the communications, occupy certain strategic points and operate against that part of the Boer army not required for the defense of Pretoria. This part of the Boer army is expected to fall back into the north in the Zoutpansberg mountains, which the Boers are reported to intend to make their stronghold, and where they expect to carry on the war against England indefinitely. The Daily Ledger, Jan, 17th.

THE NICARGUA CANAL.

NICARAGUA AND COSTA RICA PROTEST.

NEW YORK, March 5th. The governments of the small republics of Nicaragua and. Costa Rica, through which the inter-oceanic canal will past, have lodged a joint protest against the proposal to fortify the Canal for defense when built. The protest has been sent in duplicate to Mr. Hay, Secretary of State for Foreign Affaire, and to Lord Paunce forte, the British Ambassador 10 Washington, these two having recently negotiated, on behalf of their respective governments, the abrogation of the Clayton-Bulwer Treaty, which provided that the country constructing any such canal must guarantee its neutrality and must not fortify it. This treaty, while framed with the best intentions, really stood in the way, because no government would ever want to sink such a huge amount of money in a canal without having the right to protect its interests.
