EXTRAORDINARY AFFAIR AT

SHANGHAI, March 6ili
A most daring attempt is reported to hava been made try the Pootung gang of desperadoes to extend their operations to the Shanghai side of the Whangpon, an attempt having, it is said, been made to raid the China Merchants Lower Wharf at Hongkew this morning. From wint can be gathered, it appears that a large quantity of tribute rice is at present being. landed at this wharf, and this fact having by Some means become known to the Pootung gang, it apparently appeared to them to be a good opportunity to effect a robbery on large scale
Accordingly a large band, numbering, it is this morning from sampans at the wharf and said, as many as 300, landed about nine o'clock
commenced to drive away the Shanghai coolies, on the pretence of doing the work of handling the rice, their object being, of course, plunder, - A disturbance naturally cusued, and for a con. siderable time matters looked very threatening. There are only three foreigners at the wharf, but as soon as information of the occurrence was brought to the office they hurried to the scene. As soon as they put in an appearance, however, the Pootung gang made, a rush for their sampans in order to escape. 14,000 gallons Mr. Middleton, Mr. Harris, and another, however, pursued the band in a launch and succeeded in capturing about twenty-five of 27,800
