THE S. 8. GLENARTNEY"

ASHORE.

SINGAPORE, 27th February

It is understood that the Sea Belle, on her. way hare from Penang with the Governor went to the assistance of the 1.5. Glenartney. This vessel is reported ashore on the Blenheim Shoal in the Straits of Malaccu, at a point about eleven miles north of the one fathom bank Lighthouse. This is the spot where the Eton went ashore.

formation On the arrival of the Sea Belle, was received that the Colonial steamer did end- eavour to tow the "Glemariney, off," but only succeeded in moving her slightly, there being no time to make further efforts. The Sea Belle, however, will make another attempt on her return to Penang to-morrow morningS. Press:

MR. WYNDHAM ON "EXPENSIVE REGIMENTS."

In the debates on the Army estimates, Mr. Wyndham said it was a scandal and danger to the Empire that officers were unable to enter the cavalry without an income of five hundred

pounds a year, and he thought some effort was necessary to remedy this. Commissions in the line, he said, were to be offered to Volunteer officers.

ORIGINAL CONTRIBUTIONS.

Before Mr. Brockman to lay, says the Straits Times of 28th alto, Mr. Arnot Reid nf the Straits Times asked judgment against one Von Wittekind for the suur of $45.49. The magistrate-pointed out that the summons had only been served last night. Mr. Reid said that was so, but yet he asked that the magis trate would issue a warrant for the arrest of Wittekind. Mr. Reid patinuing said

Von Wittend is a person whom we would scarcely have trusted to this amount but for the fact that he was supplying m.5.5. on veterinary and food subjects: and we were crediting to him the supposed value of these articles as original writings. Lately we dis covered that the articles were copied from n book, which is in my possession in court, and we then sued Von, Wittekind for what he owed us, resolving, of course, not him for the articles he had borrowed.

Von then seemed that

Wittekind had given up his house, bad realised his assets, and was living at the International Hotel. Later it was discovered that he had also left the International Hotel and was living in places unknown but possibly changing bis abode fre: quently. Finally it was conveyed to Mr. Reid by persons in the horse trade that Von Witte kind had money in his pocket and was deter mined to get away from the Colony willout paying. Our Asiatic, staff know certain places that were frequented at night by Von Wittekind and at one of these places Von Wittekind was served with the summons last night. On these facts, your worship, I ask judgment and a war- rant for Von Wittekind's arrest.

Mr. Brackman explained - that unless the application for a warrant were supported by two creditors in place of ons he could not do anything. Unless two creditors appeared the case must be adjourned until Monday.

Well, said Mr. Reid, the application can be reported in the newspaperin the ordinary course and possibly ether creditors will appear; and if sa 'may renew my application.

INFLUENZA AT COLOMBO,

Influenza is rampant all over the Island; there is hardly a house, that has not more or less victims prostrated by it. A thousand and ane remedies are prescribed, and every doctor in the Island has a different antidote, but all appear to agree that victims should eat as many oranges as possible. Ceylon Standard.
