The Engineer's goal had some nar row escapes. Fins combination was shown by the Fusilier's forwards, and their shooting was very accurate. Lambert was loudly applauded for his splendid defence at back. He and. Murray were almicit-impregnable The Engh neers got away once or twice but their shooting was faulty and the ball seemed to go anywhere but near the goal. It was soon seen that the decision had deprived the soldiers of one of their best inen.

Things looked anything but comfortable for the Fusiliers now, nine men agai'st eleven is rather long odds. A somewhat remarkable, proceeding in the Legislative Council of the Straits Settlements on December 19th last is reported in the: Singapore Free Press. The Acting Colonial Secremy proposed a vote of Sando for the South African War Fund, which means that a considerable sum out of the revenues of the colony should be applied to a charitable object. It may be observeil that the proposition was approved by all the non-official members of the Council A similar vote, it appears, had been carried in the Legislative Council at Mauritius. In both these colonies the official-représenta tion on the Councils exceeds the non-official. Therefore, had there been any opposition to the proposal from the non-official members, the proposal might nevertheless have been adopted by the same simple at effective official force which votes whatever military or other conti butions Mr. Chamberlain orders from Downing Street.
