THE SITUATION IN THE FAR EAST,

ODD VOLUMES SOCIETY.

LECTURE BY CAPTAIN 4. C. ANDERSON.

Yesterday afternoon in the St. Andre's hall, to a fair gathering of members of the Odd Volumes Society, Captain G. C. Anderson gave mast instructive and interesting address on "The Situation in the Far East."

The Hen. T. . Weitehead presided. In introducing the lecturer he said that Capt. Anderson had during last year given two ad- dresses-one on "The Manning of the Mer- cantile Marine" and the other on "The Reasons for joining the Nary League" Both of these lectures liad been most instructive and he felt sure the one they were about to hear would be equally as edifying.

The lecture was rather too lengthy to give in full so we have made the following extracts.

Captain Anderson in his opening said he was the same position as Mr. Dummond as he had no difficulty in fuding something to say, the difficulty was in the selection. The lecturer made some appropriate remarks concerning the situation due to proceeding with the subject matter of his address. "The situation in the Far East."

It has bred ill feeling and misunderstandings between our countries which should not be there, and its drift is towards war on some minor issue. Until Russia advances into a defined one of British influence, we have no just cause of quarrel with her, and until such a zone of influence is clearly defined we have no just clain to arrest her advance however dis- tasteful it may be to us. Granted that we have the most profound distrust of Russian Offici- alism, we know there are good men in Russia and we must grant them the some patriotic, 'Then if feelings which we ourselves profess. the competition for running the puppet show in Peking were done away with, and Great Britain and Russia released from the necessity of each pulling its own string, our international rela tions would be on a much sounder and more. dignified footing.

No doubt our American friends will try to make the best of the islands for their own people, and quite right too, but new situations create new wants, and trade only wants facilities to make it grow. Besides longkong will be necessary to Manila for a considerable period yet, if only as a convenient health resort. THE NAVIGATION OF THE INLAND WATER- WAYS OF CHINAL
