A CORONER WHO HÊLD 30,000 INQUESTS.

Mr. Thomas Taylor, the Yorkshire County

Coronar, died at Wakefield the other day. M'

He was seventy-six years of age. In 1849 he was.appointed Deputy Coroner, so that he bid been holding inquests for over half a century. During that long period he conducted over 30,000 inquiries. He investigated the circum- stances attending several colliery disasters. On one occasion he held an inquest with reference to the loss of 354 lives.

A GREAT DIAMOND FROM KIMBERLEY,

M. Picard, Commissioner-General of the Paris Exhibition, has, says the Paris cor respondent of the Morning Port, bees informed by the president of the jewellery section that an enormous diamond from Kimberley will be exhibited in the jewellery pavilion. The stone was found shortly before the war It has been insured for £400,000, and will be shown in a showcase guarded by four policemen, At night the showcase will sink into the ground in the same way as that in which the Regent is kept at the Louvre. The new diamond is said to be finer than the Regent, the Shah, the Grand Mogul. and the famous Koh-i-noor exhibited in London in 1851. No name has yet been given to it.

He replied in the affirmative, and a conversation ensued, after which they went and had some drinks, and tonk a walk "down town." An appointment was made for the following morning. The appointment was kept, and, after a walk, they went into a public-house in Pall Mall where a man, who said his name was Patrick Fitzgerald joined them. They then went to the Bath Hotel, Piccadilly, and seated themselves as a table in the bar. Fitz kerald then unburdened his hear." He said he had only just come into some money, and had some difficulty in getting it He had just been brought to London by the "parish priest."! Out of the fortune left him £10,000 was to be given to the "poor of America," L10,000 to the rest of the world," £10,000 to the lawyers, £5,000 to Ireland, 500 to the Pope of Rome, and £500 for the repose of Mr. Fitzgerald's soul." He (the witness) drunk too much champagne, after which Fitzgerald added that he wanted two Americans to distributed the money to the poor of America, and sug gested that the witness and the prisoner should undertake the task, but they would have to show they were responsible persons with confidence in him before the money was handed THE Steamship over. Long went out to get his money, and retured with what appeared to be a bundle of Bank of England notes. He (the prosecutor) having only 2 with him, went home and fetched seven £ notes. They drank some more champagne
