BOERPHILS IN BATAVIA, Under the above heading appears the fol. lowing paragraph in the Daily Mai
*M Towyer Bower, a member of the Institute of Civil Enginers, who has lately returned from the Dutch Fast Indies, reports that sympathy in Batari is wholly with the Boers, as might have beenexpected, seeing that the Dutch of the East Indies are really the Dutcit of Holland. The colonists are subscribing freely to a find for threbeneût of the Boers, and at the time of Mr. Hower's departure about £5.000 had been colleerd. The Batavian Dutch are as bitter again England as any of our continental illwisher, but their giver distance front reliable sources of information about South African Birs accentuates their ignomnce of the real tes of the war and its causes."

Manufaquers whore tendras were vited were askeţi in state the shortest time they would require in delivery. The ten- der of Messrs. Ker Sinan and Co Limited -fi, Mrs. London, whose works are at Stoke on Trent was accepted, their specified time-ior delivery being ten working days. The order for this material reached London, and was telephoned to the works at Stoke on Trent on Saturday morning, 19 November. A sofall portion only of the material required was in stock at works, with the exception of the bicomotives, These had been put down in the erecting shop on November 15 and were intended for the Egyptian Gavernment for the Barrage works, and would have been finished in the ordinary course in four or five weeks from that date. The extreine urgency however, demanded that every effort shoald be used, and the permission of the Inspector for the Egyptian Government in use these locom tives kaving been asked for and obtained, the two foomotives were com- pleted and tested in steam in presence of the Inspector of Iron Structures and two other in- spectors from the War Ofis on Tuesday, 275: Nayember, within three ys from order, Five miles of railway with steel deepers, two logomo-agram, Miss C. G. tives, and twenty-tour ballast, wagons with steel under-frames, and drop sides, were manufac tured, painted, picked, aut loarted into trucks, at the works of Messrs. Kerr Stuart and Co., Limited, before eight olduck on Wednesday night, the sand, the time accupied being from Saturday to Wednesday inclusive, or four working days. The wheels for these wagons were of chilled cast iron, one of the specialities of two well known firins in Edinburgh. The wheels made during the day by these firms were handed to the ailway company in Edinburgh a 6 p., reaching Stoke on Trent at eight o'clock the following morning, where they were immediately bwed and keyed upon their axles. The greater portion of the order was shipped at Birkenhead within four working days from the receipt of the order at the works. The balance of the order was completed well within the time named, was inspected, passed, and is now well on its way to the Cape,'
A BAD CHOICE.
French writers are nowitterly lamenting the choice of Kowongchau-wan, which they say is not only unsuited as a nasal base and harbour of refuge but has no commercial features to recommend it, since it is neither an entrepot por an emporium for Chinese produce. One writer in L'Avente du Temkin recommends an- nexation in Yunnan, Halian, or the Yangtsze Valley !
