ANOTHER PROTEST.

On Chinese New Year's day a return. Shoot- ing Match between leams of to nih a side of the longkong Police, and Naval Yard Police took place on the Association Range and resulted in a second win for the town Police by 37 points. The Naval Yard Police were armed with the Magazine rifle while the town Police had to confent themselves with the out-of-date Martini-Henry Carbine. The range was accu-Cheng Hsiao-su, protesting against the vin. pied by a shooting party of bluejackets till 3.30 p.m., consequently before the completion of the shooting at the last distance darkness set in, which made good shouting at that dis tance difficult. In the unavoidable absence of Inspector McNah the town Pulice team were captained by Inspector flannah while Inspt. McEwan captained the Naval Yard team. The conditions were 7 rounds at 200, 400, and goo yards, Bisley rules. The shooting was fairly good considering, with few exceptions, the town Police crack team were not put forward.

Following are the scores!-----

TOWN POLICE,

WUCHANG, January 27th, The forced resignation of the Emperor and the appointment of an heir to the Throne came like a clap of thunder upon the gentry and officiala of this city, Hanyang, and Hankow. A memorial was drawn up last night by fifty- thice officials of this province at the head of whom are Ts'en Chuntning, Provincint Judge, the Banlin Liang Tin-fen and, the Tantai

lation of the laws of the land by appointing an heir to the Throne of the late Emperor Tung Chih thereby ignoring the present Kuang Hsi. Kuang Hai wore three year's mourning for Tung Chih as for his father and therefore he was the legal heir to the The memorial was taken up to and Governor Viceroy Chang· Chih-tung Yu Ying-lien by the above-named three officials, asking for their signatures to the document.. Governor Yi gladly signed it but Vicemy Chang refused." Upon this the Provincial Judy in great with threw his pfeil hat epon the Viceroy's table saying that be had no more wish to serve such a governs" ment, and that lie and his friends who drew up the memorial were going personally to present it at Peking. The Viceroy tied to piesuade the judge to reconsider, his words whereupon H.. Ten rose up, and as Viceroy Chang thed to take hold of his arm to make him reseal hius, waved him back and pushing aside. the Virerny marched snaight out of the room without paying any more attention to his superior officer. The fifty-three officials con- cerned start by the first steamer for Shanghai en route to Peking. It is stated that they fully expect to be executed by the furious Empress Dowager but they are prepared for every eventality.-V. C. Daily Netos.

ANECDOTE OF GENERAL WAUCHOPE.

(Communicated.)

It will be noticed that the game is very similar to the old English one of rounders The ground is marked uff in the diamond slape, common on playing caufis, à base Laing at each corner, the positions of the fielding side being plainly indicated by the list of players as given below. The batsman is armed with a fly heavy club, about thce feet long, tapering from three inches at the base to a convenient handle. He has to be extremely expert hit the ball within the required angle, or degrees, as the ball going outside this space, is declared a foul ball, and while not ruttating for the batsman is liable to It will be remembered by a good few that -put-him-out if caught by one-of the dich. The the late Major-General. Wauchope, who fell at. catcher has the most onerous and dangerous the head of the Highland Brigade, contested. post, standing just behind the batsman and in the seat of the county of Midlothian with Mr. constant danger of being hit either by the ball | Gladstone in 1891, and, by his striking person- or the bat, and as the ball is a hard leather |ality and family clains, secured so many votes racquet ball and is thrown with the pitcher's among the county electors that he succeeded in fulfstrengh it would inflict quite a musty, sting-lowering the G. OM's, majority at the previous ing blow. To guard against this he is, however, election by over 3,000, although he was not provided with a five guurd, similar to those ¦ returned. used by fencers, only with heavier wire and no no head guard, and scoss an his left hand large padded leather glove. The pitcher" or as we should call him in English the bowler, throws the ball very swiftly, we won't say of the bats man because if he should hit his body the latter is given a base, while if the batsman intention ally allows the ball to hit him then he is out. The umpire stands behind the Pitcher and decides on every point. His job is no sinecure either.

Enough has now been said to enable persons wishing for some new game to try this one, wo should strongly recommend the youths of the Colony who wish to cultivate quickness of eye and aim and want, healthy exercise, and are not afraid of receiving preity stinging knocks to practice this We are sure they would benefit by it.

The brave General_was_at_that_time-only- Major, seconded-in-command in his Regiment, the Black Watch, although revet-Colonel in the Army, and it was shonly after the election that the following incident took place, the Black Watch at that time being stationed at Edinburgh.

The Commanding Officer was away on leave, and "Tim," by which name alone Major Wah-} chope was referred to by his men was in sem porary command,

"Tim" was going round the barrackrooms one Saturday morning accompanied by his Ad; jutant, Quarter-mister, &c. doing what is termed “C. O's weekly inspection of rooms."

He came to a room occupied by a few N.C.Os. of the Staff Corps, and, is was his wont with rooms not-belonging to his own Regiment, was about to pass by the open door when his quick eye caught sight of nothing less than a large life-size portrait of his political rival Mr. Gladstone, hung above one of the beds in | the room.

"Tim" at once entered the room and asked whose bed it was, a corporal stepped up and said he was the owner of it.

THE EMPRESS DOWAGER'S

LATEST COUP.

WARNINGS.

SBANGHAI, 27th January. It was reported in local mandarin circles | yesterday that 'eking telegrams had been received announcing that the Empress Dowager had sent secret decrees to her nephew the generalissimo Jung Lu, and several others whose sympathies are with the deposed Em- peror, advising them to resign unless they desired the disgrace of being publicly cashiered and dismissed. In the case of Jung Lu, his disgrace is due more to the blow he gave his Aunt's favourite eunuch the other day than in any decided predilection for the Emperor Kuang Hsu.

THE CLOUD ON. THE BORI205. A party of some fifty Chinese, members of the literali, gentry, and notables hailing from all parts of the Empire, now living in Shang- hai, held a secret meeting yesterday in the house of one of them to consider the new situa tion brought about by the deposition of the Emperor Kuang Hst. The result was that a number of resolutions were unanimously drawu up, protesting in vigorous language against the treasonous and high-handed proceedings of the Empress Dowager and her advisers, affirming their determination to recognise. pone but Kuang Ist as their true Sovereign, and calling upon the notables, gestry, literāts, and common people of the Empire to make a combined protest, and, if need be, take up arms for the true Emperor. These resolutions, etc, are to be printed and disseminated throughout the length and breadth of China, and already 10,000 copies have been sent for distribution in the Yangtze Valley. We, learn that the Association which was foinied by the above- noted influential gentlemen yesterday has decided to issue two million copies of these resolutions by the tili of next month.
