the end of the wire and we are left in ignorance even of the casualties and of the cause of the latest reverse. The persistent manner in which reverses have followed each report of a British success is to say the least of it, most disheartening, but still we do not think that there is cause for alarm or despondency. We must remember that the nation has said that the South African war must he fought to a finish, and that that finish must be satisfactory to Great Britain and, this being the case, we do not think that there can lie any possibility of the nation failing to carry out its appointed task. We may sulfer yet other reverses, but, in the end, we must triumph.

BRITISH NORTH BORNEO. (From Our Own Correspondent,)

SäNDARAN, 22nd Januury. With regard to the rebellions Mat Salleh, I hear that orders have been received to finish him and a different course has been adopted from that hitherto employed to effect his cap- ture, Capt. Harrington is in supreme com- mand and is now in the Tambunan Country avancing with the main body, having subor dinates in charge of various outports to cut off stragglers and prevent supplies passing in. Beveral captures have been made. The number of men engaged amminis to 500, of which, however, 200 only constitute the fighting force.

Rumour has it that Mat Salleh has a very small following, but that has been always stated from the time the trouble first startédi, and now they are not able to reduce him to submission. He is now in one of his forts in the Tambunan district, from which, no doubt, he will retire in good order when he deems it expedient, unless the attacking force guard his lack door a little closer than on previous" cecusions. There is little'sickness amongst the men and the weather has been very good, which has facilitated operations considerably. The time of the year, the rainy season being con weather, in fact, has been phenominal for this ›

spicious by its absence, very little rain having fallen.

The Chairman, in proposing the adoption of the report and accounts, said that the report gave a very succinct and full account of the work that had been done by the institution during the previous year and he was pleased see that the Institution of Engineers and shipbuilders of Hongkong was "hot only in the happy position of having gained the confidence and support of its members but was doing the work for which it was originally founded. The Chairman then briefly alluded to, and commented upon the three papers recently read before the members, the first one by Commander Hobson U.S.N, on the uses of Alumininium in constructive work and its adaptability to shipbuilding and on- gineering. Nickel and aluminium and nickel steel are both coming into use as substitutes for ordinary inild steel in the construction of boilers. Experiments have demonstrated that nickel steel of 20 to 25 per cent. nickle will have as regards corrosion & vastly longer life than mild steel, and as regards deterioration from the action of heated gases, steain and salt water at least twice the durability of mild steel. To shipowners and others the growing in- ANYTHING about the Imperial Light Horse portance of aluminium and nickel is a matter is of interest, especially when written by one of great practical interest. Rubber is receiving well merited attention. The North Borneo Trading Company and others being engaged in the culivation. As far as can be judged from present conditions it ap pears very promising, and if successful will no doubt prove a very good speculation for those who have invested in this (for B. N. Boraco) new enterprise. There is a good chance for a good profit accruing to the owners of the cocoanut plantations, as these appear to be thriving well, and with the exception of wild pigs which destroy the young trees they have few enemies.

Coffee estates are not being extended; owing to the past great fall in prices, owners have been compelled to reduce expenditure as far as possible, keeping the estate clean, and pickling crops are the only operations carried on at present, but hopes are entertained of the market recovering. In that case the out-

increased. There is a steady local demand for small quantities, as the quality produced in Bomeo is first class.
