PRINCE HENRY.
A LITTLE PRINCE BORN AT HOME.
SINGAPORE, January 12th. On Wednesday morning, H. R. II. Prince Henry of Prussia visited the Pulo Branni Smelting Works, accompanied by Admiral Fritze, Korrettenkapilain von Wittleben, and Mr. H. Eschke, the German Consul General here. The party were shown over the works by Mr. Muhlinghaus and Mr. Carroll, and the Prince evinced much interest in the various processes demonstrated. I may be mentioned that the previous evening, Prince Henry received telegram from Europe to the effect that on the 8th inst. a lttle prince had been born to him. It will be retembered that Princess Henry, whe had been with her husband in the Far East for some time, passed through Singapore on her way to Europe a short time back.
January 13th.
Last night, H. E. Major-General Dickson had the honour to crestin Prince Henry to dinner at Headquarter House. The band of the King's Own" played a selection of music H. R. H. Prince Henry of Prussia was enter tained to dinner by the officers of the German cruiser fansa last night. The guests included Major-General Dickson, Mr. Eschke, Mr. Pulifucken, Mr. Sebut, and Capt. Moatalman of the Austrain cruiser-Straits Times.
THE LATE MR. SHELFORD.
It is with very deep regret, says the Straits Times of 13th instant, that we announce the deul in Europe yesterday of Mr. Thomas Shelford, CM.G. To explain the regret that the community of Singapore will feel at this death it is necessary to make a comparison. Since Mr. Shelford was a merchant and a local publicist of Singapore it is not possible that the regret which is felt at his death can be spread over so wide an area as the regret at the death of the late Sir Charles Mitchell, who was to Penang, and to the Malay States, almost familiar a personality as he was to Singapore But within -the- town of Singapore itself Mr. Sheltord was better known and was, more intimately by many people, even esteemed than Sir Charles Mitchell could have been. That is not said to disparage the universal sorrow at the great loss of the Governor, but it is said to convey to the mind outside of Singapore the real comparision, with out which this news could not be understood.
THE HONGKONG TELEGRAPH. MONDAY, JANUARY 22, 1900.
RECORD SEA SPEED,
In somewhat boisterous weather, with a heavy sea running, the new turbine destroyer Viper, recently completed by the Parsons Steam Turbine Company, of Wallsend, took a second trial trip over the measured mile near the Tyne. The trial was to all appearances a complete success, though, of course, no official statement has been made as to the actual re sults attained. "Nevertheless," writes the New castle correspondent of the Shipping Garette, 'I am in position to say from information have been able to glean, that the Viper did at least thirty-seven knots when opened out at full speed and that is two knots more than the speed contracted for. It is possible that she will yet do better. She certainly surprised those on board, and they are not likely to for- get their outing, for the deck was over and over again buried in the seas, and they returned home thoroughly soaked."

The Malay Mall gives a detailed account of to ascend Gunong Tahan, which is highest mountain in the Malay Peninsula. The journey was very trying. Mr. Skea! reached the mountain but could not get to the top, owing to the tremendous difficulties in the way, Gunong Tahan is described as being a mountain of remarkabed shape, about nine to Len thousand feet high.
