DIRECTORS.
I had occasion to throw things at another Aunt Sally, and the game is extremely dreary to all concemed, and there is really nothing to be said for it one way or the other. Therefore, if Mat Salleh will accept prace on a proper footing-peace that must be lasting-then I hope there will be nu question of warfare be tween us. If, on the other hand, Mat Salleh elects for war, as everybody thinks who has followed the 'course of the African events, where another Mat Salleli saw fit to make termis for a period and then renewed war, one must do very much the same as is being done in South Africa at the present moment, and 1 know if it comes to that (and no one will regret. it more intensely than myself) the only thing. will be to settle the matter once for all, and in that I feel sure I shall have the support of the Chairman, the whole Court of Directors, and every shareholder in the Company (cheers).

PIRACY AND BRIGANDAGEL In another colum will be found a staf ment, made by a Chinese erantemporary, to the effect that the pirates and brigands of the Two Kwangs, and rentéent with levying

It must remembered that the Chinesar Men. A CURIOUS DIFFICULTY.
The Home District military authorities are faced with the difficulty of finding accommoda. tion for the remainder of the Brigade of the Guard Reserve now warned to assemble. They number some 1,400, and every barrack room, not only in London, but in the immediate districts of Woolwich, Gravesend, Hounslow, and, Windsor is full, either with reserve riten or nilitia. The volunteer drill-balls at this line of year are fully occupied nightly, and the time of year prohibits putting the men under canvas. In all probability the medically fit will be pro- vided with their kits and granted leave to return -home and assemble when warned either by letter or telegram, pay and messing being granted to then.
An Interview with Dr, Leyds.
THE CABLE MONOPOLY
PARIS, December 21st.
A long interview with Dr. Leyds is published to-day by the Matin. The Transvial repre- sentative protested against the monopoly of the Cables, which, he said, prevented him from communicating with his Government, and would also prevent President Kroger from formulating a desire for peace or anything else if he had the intention of doing so. Moreover, he (Dr. Layds) could not reply to the inquiries which reached him daily regarding the British wounded and prisoners in Pretoria. Referring to the mines, Dr. Leyds stated that mining property was respected in the Transvaal, but in the event of invasion of that country by British troops the police guards would have something else to do than to protect the mines. As re- gards any possible danger from the blacks the latter would not be sorry to see the two white. races fighting against each other, and the hour was not far distant when they would join in the miclée.
In the course of the interview Dr. Leyds said: "We love peace more than glory, and we are fighting only to obtain a definitive and honourable peace. I am convinced that at Pretoria there will always be a willingness to accept it or offer it at any period of the strug- gie, providing that peace guarantees our inde pendence."-Reuter,

It remains perfectly inexplicable that General Lyttelton's brigade, which occupied a central position in order to assist either wine, does not seem to have followed up an attack so nearly successful, and, in fact, it is not mentioned as having been in action at all. Our correspon- dent says the Boers had only ten guns, and that our naval guns made oxcellent practice. Yet we do not seem to have silenced any of the enemy's guns, and we are told that it was in an attempt to get within effective range that our eleven guns were lost. Within effective range of what?
