We have mobilized and despatched it with a celerity, and completeness for which no one was prepared to give us credit, We have ahother army in reserve and the crisis has evoked such a warlike spirit in our people and has exhibited to the world in so marked a fashion the essential unity and loyalty of race that, even at the present moment, with -our defeats and misfortunes freshly present to our minds, we have just cause to be proud and to rejoice.

The principal thing dance music is time for as it is unnecessary, to observe, and simple airs played in perfect time is better than any of the classical tuneful selections, which whilst from a musical stand- point may be excellent productions, are wretch- ed to dance to. Under these cir cumstances every one is entitled to criticise the conduct of the canipaign and the critics which will most directly affect those concerted in it will be chiefly that of the Public, and not that of the military expert. The man in the street, in other words of the British first thing which the ordinary may is unable to understand is why Gent, Buller split up his strength into two forces. When he arrived in THE Japanese Government has at last sub. Africa with his Army Corps he had two objects in front of him. conclusion that there was a very strong proba- bility of the enemy, being largely reinforced by satisfactorily without the assistance of foreign recruits every day. General Buller, then, had two things to do, if possible, and a large force of the enemy, the exact strengil of which he had not the slightest knowledge of, to prevent him doing it. He determined to do both things at once. He split up his forces into three units of about 10,000 men: each and, as far as can be inferred from their movements, directed that one should march up to the right and relieve Ladysmithi, another to the left and relieve Kimberley, and that the third should march up the middle and attack Bloemfontein, where it would be joined in time by the other two. This plan appeals to us at once by its simplicity and its effectiveness, if it could be successfully carried out. The trouble came when the enemy failed to appreciate and fall in with. it. The result has been that we are almost in a worse position than before the Army
