FUNERAL OF THE LATE BIR C. B. H. MITCHELL, G.0.MAGNI

Seldom has there, been seen in Singapore a more imposing, spectacle than that which marked the conimittal to its last resting place of the mortal remains of the late Sir Charles Mitchell, G. Despite the necessarily short notice to make all the arrangentents for so exceptionally important a ceremony, yet in every detail it was conducted with dignity, and that very dignity lent solemnity to what is in- disputably the most solemn public-function that any community can be called upon to participate in..

The morning, although threatening rain, was fortunately fine and cloudy: A faw drops did fall, but nothing to inconvenience the vast con course gathered in the Cemetery and on, the surrounding reads. Besides those taking part in the Funeral Procession, there were large numbers of natives and others on the. Filter Bed ground, on the slopes of Government Hill, and in other parts of the Cemetery. The greatest decorum prevailed, however, and the order that kept carriages from the vicinity of the Cemetery materially assisted the Police arrangements.

Punctually at half past six the funeral cortegé started. Twelve Royal Marine Light Infantry, of which arm of the service the late Governor

was a retired Lieut. Colonel, marched on either. side of the coffin, which was covered with Union Jack, on which was placed the sword of the deceased, and his jewel of the Grand Cross of St. Michael and St. George.

In slow time, and to the strains of Chopin's "Funeral March," the hearse and cortege made its way through the Government Domain to the Cavanagh-road. From there, six paces apart, on both sides, men of the King's Own Regi, -ment lined the road. The Police lined all the

roads in the vicinity of the Cemelery,

At the junction of the road. from Govern ment Hill and Cavenagh Rond the head of the military and naval, portion of the funeral procession was placed, the S. V. A. ast) the junior corps coming first, Capt. St. Clair in command, in the absence of Major the Hon'ble A. Murray. Then followed the Singapore "Company, Royal Engineers, commatided by Lt. Vesey, R.E., No.1 Singa pore Company Hongkong Singapore Battalion R.A., in charge of Capt. De. Berry, RA, of the two companies 1st King's Own (Royal Lan- caster) Regiment; the Royal Engineers com- manded by Major Lewis Jones, H.E.; the Royal Artillery, commanded, by Major Lewes, R.A. and last, as the senior arm of the service, a strong naval force of blue-jackets and marines.

Following the military and naval portion of the procession there came the members of the Executive and Legislative Councils, the For- eign Consuls, the Masonic Body (of which the late Governor was District Cirand Master) and a very large and representative body of mourn ers of the civil community of Singapore,

The Puine Judges present were Mr. Justice Law and Mr. Justice Harwood.

The Civil Mourners included the heads of all Government Departments the President of the Municipality, Mr. A. Gentle, and the heads of nearly every mercantile frm in Singa

porc.

Slowly the sad procession wended its way to the west entrance of the Cemetery, where the coffin was translerred from the hearse to the shoulders of the beating party from the Royal Marines, and was met by the Clergy and Choir of St. Andrew's Cathedral. Archdeacon Per ham was unfortunately too ill to attend; is, in fact, under orders to proceed to Europe, The Rev. D. Holland Stubbs conducted the service in the Mortuary Chapel; the first part of the ceremony by the Naval Chapalin (Rev. H. Dalzell) and the concluding portion by the Military Chaplain, Rev. E. Wetherall. In the Chapel the surpliced choir sang the goth Pealm

The coffin was borne out of the Mortuary Chapel, preceeded by the Choir and Clergy, and followed by the chief mourners. Immediately after the Benediction the firing party of the King's Own, a hundred strong, fired the usuni three volleys in the air-the soldier's requiem. Then the various military and naval units marched out of the cauetery and the great gathering within the cemetery, all English-speaking Singapore practically, slowly dispersed, after such a ceremony as had never before been witnessed in the Colony. The inscription on the coffin was

7th December, 1899

Aged 63 years.

At the meeting of the Singapore Legislative Council on the 12th instant reference was made to the death of Sir Charles Mitchell, the late Governor, as follows

Mr. Burkinshaw-Sir, on behalf of the Un official Members of this Council I desire to give expression to the profound grief felt by them at the loss which this Colony has suffered by the death of the late Governor, Sir Charles Mitchell, than whom no one could be more up right, honourable, and conscientious in the performance of his duties. The relations be tween the late Governor and the members of this Council, extending for a period of six yeats, have been always characterised by perfect har mony, due to his consistent consideration of the views of all the members and his very manifest desire to do that which was best. I beg to move the following motion se

Resolved.

That an entry be made in the minutes of the proceedings of this Council that the members are possessed by a festing of profound grief for the loss which they and this Colony have suf fered by the death of the late Governor Sir Charles Mitchell.

Also resolved that a copy of the above entry be sent by the Clerk of the Council to Lady Mitchell. accompanied by a letter stating that this Council desires to send to her an assur ence of the sympathy of the members with her In her great loss,

Sir Alexander Sweltenham, was quite sure he could say for himself, and on behalf of his brother officials on the Council, that they agreed with all that was in the motion proposed by Mr. Burkinshaw It was not for them who had served under the late Sir Charles Mitchell to use any words to express the loss the Colony had sustained, That had been well said by the Secretary of State it his despatch, which had been publianed in the Garella. They only desired to express their deep sympathy with Lady. Mitchell,

The motion was then put and carried Mr. Burkinshaw ventured to submit to the Council that it would be a fitting mark of respect to the late Governor that the Council should adjourn without transacting any further business. It seemed to him more especially fitting that that should be done when they bore. in mind that that meeting had been actually. convened by his direction and at which be would, in the ordinary course of events have presided. He moved that the Council adjourn to Tuesday nextifung

M. Gentil adds that on August 3rd he received at Gribing from M. Bretonnet, in command of the advance guard of the expedition, a letter dated July 16th, sent from Cogubu, in lat. 9deg, 42deg. N. This letter intimated that an attack by Rabah was seen to be imminent. On the next day, August 4th M. Gentil set out, having with him the company commanded by Captain Julien, 127 strong

When, in the course of this march he arrived at Gaura (odeg. zomin N.), on August 16th, the news of the disaster was brought him by the Senegalese sergeant who escaped from the massacre, M.
