The French Demand on China. PEKING, November 9th. France contemplates the leasing of a piece of land, not for settlement purposes, in Kwang- chau Bay on the same terms as Russia leases Port Arthur, and has been negotiating with the Chinese Government for that purpose.. But as the replies of the Chinese Government were ambiguous, France has decided to send troops from Tonkin or Saigon to reinforce the troops in occupation at that place. This is believed to be a measure to compel the Chinese Govern inent to accede to the French demand.

LOGAL AND GENERAL,

THE proprictors of the London Globe, have engaged Earl de la Warr as their war corres- pondent.

MESSRS. JARDINE, MATHESON & Co. inform us that they have just received a telegram from the Head Office of the Indo-China Steam Navigation Company, Lid., London, stating that the shares oftlyat Company are now quoted on the Stock Exchange.

We find, on enquiry, that those players who did not um up stayed away on their own in- opitiative as no notice was sent round that the match had been postponed. In the result a scrotch six a side match was played between the Engineer's and the two or three Club men who put in an appearance. Although rain was falling it was not very heavy and nothing to be compared to some of the weather in which matches are played at home and it would have afforded both teams a capital opportunity of a Hittle practice on wet ground, and, it is rather a pity it was not taken advantage of It is with grent regret that we learn that our information respecting the probability of same of the V. R. C. team joining the Engineer's Club was only too well founded. Tuohy and Henderson have joined the ranks of the latter and will probably appear regularly for them; we are afraid this will be fatal to all chance of the V. R. C. making a creditable show in the competition, if, indeed they make any show at all, for it is rumoured that, in addition to the loss of the above mentioned players, their captain will not, in all probability be seen on the field again this season. These losses must be very disheartening but they need not be overwhelm- ing, a good team is often madein an incredibly short time out of what appears to be the most hopeless materials and if the V. R. C. put their heart and soul in it they will have a good team yet, and everyone will be glad to see it. The match on Wednesday between the Club's 2nd team and H4,M.S. Endymion' aroused a good dent of interest. There is little doght that the success of the experiment of running a and tea and of keeping up the members' interest in it, depended to a great extent on the first match, and the Club reserves came very well out of it. The science displayed was, as might only have been expected, not of a very high order, but we have seldom witnessed a match in which all the players from the centre forward to the goalkeeper tried harder, or fought helter, or displayed more keenness from start to finish. It was quite clear that every man had his heart and soul in it and thai alone is half way to victory. With a little judicious couch- ing, a great deal more steadiness, and little more lead work" the 2nd team will be an walk over" for any team the Colony, not excepting the rst team. The Chief Gauli notice. able was by far too greata tendency to stick to the ball, both forwards and halves were equally guilty in this respect, especially the centre forward and centre half; the sooner the team as a whole get rid of the idea that their value as players increases in proportion to the time they keep the hall to themselves the better. We are afraid, too, we cannot tell them to look to the first team for an example. There are one or two flageant delinquents there The players, generally, also, seemed anxious to play in every place but their proper one and this is a fault which must be remedied ás soon as possible. "Do your job and no more is a most val a football precept and should always he borde in mind. From the information which was extricted from the ex-Court Inter preter it would seen that the aim of the society is to upset the present Tsing Dynasty, which in 1644 upset the Ming Dynasty; and beco more restore the power of the latter. The legend of the formation of the society seems to be that the early Taing rulers, for some malicious purpose, set fire to a certain monastry which contained eighteen

HONGKONG, Friday, November 17th. Messrs. Benjamin, Kelly and Pous, in their weekly share report, state-

On Monday the 1st team meet the combined R.A. And a very tight match should take place. The Club will have two entirely néw backs, otherwise the team will be the saine as the one which beat the 28th Coy, last week.

We hope to see the forwards combine more with the halves as it is always irritating to see a man uselessly trying to get through about six hall waiting to opponents when there is help him who would let him have it lack as soon as he has run on past the opponents in front of him.

Another thing which has struck us about the Club'e play is that the two wing men, gol though they are, often delay sending the ball into the middle until the opposing defence has had time to get back into goal, Danby is especially good at this.

It should always be remembered that the longer the ball is kept on the wing the longer your enemies' defence have to get ready to meet it when it is put in the centre. It may almost be laid down as an invariable axion that a wing man should never keep the ball after he has once got into his opponents' 25, and not only this, but an inside forward should never pass to his outside when in the opponents' 23. The goal is then the propar place to make for, the sconer the bitter.

THE U.S. STATE ELECTIONS. To The Euror or HosaKONG TELEGRAPH." DEAR SIR-The paragraph in your last issue. giving some details about the recent State elections, as published originally in the Shang hat Mercury, is very interesting, as far as it goes. It does not go quite far enough, though, for a reliable to enable the general public estimate of the true purport of the elections and their probable effect on the presidential election in Noveinber next, or rather I should say, perhaps, that Consul General Goodnow who seems to have furnished the Mercury with the news) has not gone quite far enough. He has stated that the result of the state elec tions in six out of the forty odd States, indicates "remarkable unanimity of the people in favour of the Administration's policy" and he evid- ently bases his opinion on what turns out, on careful examination of the records of the last state elections, to be false promises, Kentucky not being, as stated, "a strongly democraile

state,"

The prisoner, on being charged at the Police Station confessed that he was a member of the Society but explained that he had been forced to. become a member at his trial to-day, 1 he denied that he had said this, not ing the evidence of bis signed declaration, and stated that the documents and insignia which were found in his possession belonged to two other Chinamen who had escaped.

His Lordship, in summing up, pointed out that the law fald it down distinctly that should any. papers, insignia, or other pamphernalia be longing to a Triad Society be found upon a person or in his costody or possession, it would be taken as evidence that that person" was a member of the society, and the burden of proof would then rest with the accused to. prove that he was not a member. If therefore the jury were satisfied with the prisoner's statement in spite of his previous confessian, they would find him not guilty.

The jury, after a sluit retirement, found the prisoner guilty and His Lordship sentenced him to six months imprisonment with hard labour.

Chu Tsun was then charged with similar offence and pleaded not guilly. The evidence went to shew that the prisoner was arrested in a barber's shop, upon information being supplied that he was a member of the. society, and, upon being searched, was found to have concealed, in an inner pocket next to the skin, two documents which on being translated proved to be exhortations to all brothers of the society, with the assistance of the God of War, who is the patron of the society, to put to death all their enemies and a promise of certain promotions for the faithful when sach had been donc The prisoner, who described himself as a pugilist, a doctor, and one who got his living by saying prayers for others, at first admitted that these documents belonged to him but when he found that they would. be held to incriminate him, deniedthat he had so admitted, but the jury, without retiring, found him guilty and His Lordship sentenced him to six months imprisonment.
