REPORTED RETROCESSION

OF SAMCHUN.

It is reported that instructions have been received from the Home Authorities for the retrocession of the walled city of Samchun, which was occupied by a British force under General Gasceigne on 16th May last, to the Chinese in consideration of an indemnity of ninety thousand dollars, which it is said the Chinese authorities have agreed to pay.

As we pointed out at the time when the re tracession of Sanichun was first talked of, such a step can only serve to damage British prestige We only wonder that the Authorities have not also offered to hand back that plague spot Kowloon City and a few other points in No tecolor As Geners! Gascoigne announced to the people of Samchun that the place would remain under. British rule it must be galling to him to find that his words have been thrust aside by the, Home Authorities. We trust that the China Association, the Chamber of Commerce and the Navy League will have something to say upon the subject.
