SHANGHAI AUTUMN RACE MEETING.

OFFICIALS:

Judge-Mr. A. McLeod. Stewards in Charge of Scales:-Messrs, Gove and Jackson. Ste- wards in Charge of Telegraph and Numbers: Messrs. J. Liddell and Pond. Stewards in Charge of Pari-Mutuel :--Mr. 13. A. Clarke and Count von Butler. Starters:-Messrs. E. H. Gore-Booth and Ashley, Timekeeper:-Mr.. A. E. Jones. Clerk of the Course?~Mr. E. Hi Gore-Booth: Secretary:-Mr. W. F. Wingrove. SECOND DAY, WEDNESDAY, 1ST NOVEMBER, 1899.

In bright contrast to the depressing and camp influences of the opening day, the Race Ulub was favoured with the finest of fine weather for their second day's races, and it being also Ladies' Day a large number of the fair sex were very much in evidence. The course was naturally heavy at the outset, but as the day wore on it became fairly fast and by to-morrow should be flying. The chief interest naturally centred in the Lager and Shanghai Stakes, the opinion being that whichever event Damaskus should start in would be a gift to the slashing brown, in spite of the fact that several of the most likely candidates were specially kept over for the first-named event, in which the names of three Derby winners must be included, viz, Wild Rose, Rio Grande and Interrogation. However, the, event, resulted after a good race in Damaskus first calching | the Judge's eye. The enclosure after yester day's rain was somewhat wet and cut up, but was much availed of during the afternoon. for promenading. The Pari, Totalisator and the lookle had their share of constituents and everything was carried out in fair time. Below

The open letter in question runs as follows:-- **We, the under-noted people of China who are lovers of justice and peace, herein reveren- tially ask after His Excellency Kang Yu-wei's health and prosperity. We sincerely trust that, Your Excellency will sedulously take care of your person and refrain from acting mashly."

The Echoide Chine puts the following com- plexion on the news from Natal :—-

"The last war news is decidedly bad and the Boers are becoming more and more formidable. "We learn that Ladysmith is vigorously besieged and is in a very critical situation, and we shall probably get the news to-morrow of a disaster similar to that of Majuba Hill.

"The English troops hemmed in on all sides tried to disengage themselves during the day on the 27th of October; their outposts were carried off, and 1,500 miles which formed the reserve of the English-cavalry, were captured. "Without stopping over this success, the Boers possessed themselves of the Ladysmith slaughter houses and the cattle intended for the revictualling of the English anny.”

THE LORD MAYOR'S SHOW.
