THE HONGKONG TELEGRAPH. WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 1, 1899.
Westom crains from. Aldershot early in the morning. Though it was so early, crowds of people lined the streets. The men wore brown khaki uniform with field service caps; some had jack-boots and others puttces. All the officers and nian carried Service revolvers. The non- commissioned officers wore long swords, and the kuuners the Artillery regulation sword. Twelve Martini-Metford darbines had been served out to each battery and in each subdivision. The gas, all 15-pounders, had already been taken down to the transporis. As the troops marched from the railway station to the dock the band of the 1st Cheshire Enginneer Volunteers play. ed "Clash Arms, Auld Lang Sync," The
Girl I Left Behind Me," and other tunes, Great enthusiasm was shown by the crowd, not a few rushing in the ranks of troops to shake hands with the soldiers. The men rais
ed their caps and waved farewells. There were also such cries as "Give old Kruger a pill" and "Bring Kruger bark." The embark ation was watched with enthusiasm. A list of the officers is given above,

In fact it may be said that the whole of the South African natives cordially detest the Boer, and the latter reciprocates, com janore. Let it be remembered, too, by those who adhere to the tenets of Mr. Morley's school, that it was in great measure due to the threa-THE New River Steamers tening attitude of Cetoways towards the Boers that we fought to bring the Zulu monarch to his senses, dospite the fact that the Boers had forcibly robbed him of an extensive tract of land between the Buffalo and Pongola Rivers. This feudal enmity was not diminished when, after Cetewayo's death sundry Boer free lances 'annexed" 3,000 square miles in the north west of Zululand, the "legality" of which was magnanimously recognised by the English Government in 1889,
Coming to Natal, its natives, who consist of many tribes with no common purpose or will, have a profound contempt for the Boer, generat ed by personal experience of his brutality, andac centuated by the humane and considerate trate nient meted out to them by the Britisher. But it has everbeen a source of perplexity and wonder- ment to the natives of Natal and the other States acknowledged themselves beaten in 1881 for why the • people of the " Great White Queen' the native takes no congnizance of so-called diplomacy and magnanimity. He understands☛ force and force alone. Yet such is the loyalty of Natal's native population, that in the event of hostilities not one nesegai would be hurled against the Boers, save in self-defence, or with the express authority of the supreme chief of the native population, his Excellency Sir Walter Hutchinson.--Pall Mall Garette Cor.

"It is stated in well-informed military quarters that the Army Corps will consist of twenty-one more Infantry battalions, five more regiments, of Cavalry, a very strong mounted Infantry contingent, and some eight more batteries of artillery, besides Engineers, Amy Service Gorps men, and Medical Staff Corps. These will be joined by the men already as the Cape and in Natal and Rhodesia, making up a regu lar army of from 50,000 to 55,000 men, with Irregulars, Volunteers, and troops from Aus- tralia and Canada: There will most probably be two divisions with about eight brigades, as well as a brigade on the line of communication and reserve..
باد
As it is necessary to have in South Africa, before large fighting forces are sent from home, a full and efficient transport service, it has been decided to despatch at a very early date a large contingent of the Army Service Corps, and twenty companies have been mentioned as the quantity to be sent from home at the end of next week. In pre- paration for this purpose the men of the com. pany stationed in London were medically Inspected on September 7th, and the same course is being taken with the much larger body of the corps at Aldershot The Army Service Corps as a whole consists of forty-two companies, with, remount companies at Wool wich and Dublin, and, with the exception of two companies in South Africa already, all are stationed at home. It is probable that the present large demand upon the corps will necessitate the calling up of some portion at least of its Reserve, which is stated to number about 2,600. No man under twenty years of nge or af less than one year's service is to go out with the companies to South Africa. OFFICERS WHO WEAR ARMOUR, Philadelphia Ledger,
To the uninitiated the days of armour have long since gone, but a visit to a certain fira situated in the West End of London will, says a writer in the Regiment, reveal the fact that hundreds of vests of mil are sold annually to officers in the British Army. The manker is a well-known gunsmith, and a large portion of his income is derived, not from manufacturing guns, but through the sale of armour to officers. As a general rule the mail is enclosed in leather casing, which is sewn inside the tunic so as to be invisible unless the garment is picked to pieces. And the same with helmets-n similar device is fixed as lining so as to give additional protection in case of peed. Some officers are not above weating mail vests underneath their tunic and perfectly obvious to their comrades, who although they may scoff in time of peace would be only too glad to don one themselves when in the middle of hostilities. The mojori ty of the maker's customers are officers, because the suits are very expensive, costing about ten guineas each. Nevertheless some "Tommies" are prepared to spe'id that amount in order to Insure themselves to a certain extent against the exorsident ballets.
