The six a side matches instituted by the Club are not yet quite over, two matches still remaining to be played: viz. Lowe Greene and Lowe Kew, and on these two matches the result will depend. Noble has finished all his matches and leaves off with a record of points; while Greene has 7 points and still one match to play. If he wins this he ties with Noble and under these circumstances, ac- cording to the original rules of the Competition, two matches must be played to decide the win that the result rests beteen Noble and Green. ner. Lowe cannot get more than 8 points so The competition has been keenly contested this year and the interest of the players has never flagged throughout, it seems to be now firmly established and likely continua (as long as an interest is taken in foot-ball in the Colony. Whether or not it tends to improve the play of those who take part in it is, perhaps, a little open to discussion, but at any rate, if it does no good in this respect, it cetainly dues no harm, while it gives the executive an opportunity of observing the capabilities of any new meinbers who have not appeared on the field before. What it does do, and what, we understand, it was the intention of the original promoters that it should do, is in the first place to give every member of the Club an opportunity of making sure of playing a certain amount of football each season, and, in the second lo ensure, that, when the regular season commences, the members of the teain are pretty well in condition and are able to play through a match from start to finish. promoted by the V. Is there no member of the V.R.C. who takes a sufficient. interest in the Club and its branches to give s small cup to be played for, this is what is wanted to put the competition on its legs and we hope that, before long, we shall see some, one coming forward with an offer. As regards the and Prisoner (Li Ki) the case against him is that he struck the deceased with a hammer on the right side of his back almost at the same time as or immediality before, the blow inflicted by the chisel.
It is clear from the medical evidence that the blow with the hammer in no way contributed to the death of the deceased. It is not alleged that the second prisoner was present at the conversation as to the money nor has any
special reason been suggested why he should
have joined in the attack on the deceased. ---

When the team takes the field; we shall probably find several well known players amongst them whose abilities have long been recognized and possibly, at times, even feared, amongst football circles in the Colony, we wish the Club every success.
The opening match of the club was post- poned at the last moment owing to Military duties interfering with the Gunner team. This was to be regretted, as many people were looks. ing forward to it but it was, we suppose, under the circumstances, unavoidable.

No
If, for instance, a man had a chise! in his hand and while working at his bench receives a violent blow and turns round and stabs his assailant with the chisel in the heat of temper caused by the blow and the assailant unfortunality dies from that blow, this might not improperly be held to amount only to manslaughter; but if a man, receiving a slight push, retaliates by striking his assailant violently with his fist and the assailant runs away, there undoubedly, if the man pursued his retreating assailant and stabbed him to death with a chisel while the assailant was unarmed and not threatening further violence, such an act would be murder. The revenge, is not proportionate to the pro- vocation and the law would imply malice.
Now, as regards the alleged act of the second prisoner, as the blow, alleged to have been inflicted by him with the hammer, in no way contributed to the death, the second prisoner would be entitled upon this indictment to be acquitted unless you are satisfied by the evidence that he was acting in concert with the first prisoner. If the attack was made by the two, together, with the intention of killing the deceased or of inflicting grievous badily harm, and the ist prisoner was found guilty of murder, then the man who struck with the hammer would be guilty of murder also, because, if two attack a man in concert and, armed with deadly weapons, both strike him and ore of them kills him, the other is responsible for the acts of the actual murderer.
