THE TRANSVAAL QUESTION.

Writing to the M C. D. News, Mr. C. N. Newman says in the different articles which I have read in various papers, published both at home and here, I note with much regret that always, in dealing with the previous Transvaal campaign of 1880-1, the writers fall into error in stating that the British troops were invariably: outnumbered by the Boer forces. In no one paign was this the case, except as far as re case throughout that short but disastrous cam garded the besieged, towns. The fights at Lang'a Nek, Ingogo or Schunin's Hooghts, and the final fatal, one at Majuba were all engaged in by about equal numbers, al though, of course, there was always a larger number of Boers in their four camps on the other side of Lang's Nek, than we had in ours at Mount Prospect, until after the defeat at Majuba and the arrival of heavy reinforcements under Sir Evelyn Wood and, later on, with Sir Fred Roberts. And I regret also to add that the losses on both sides were entirely dispro portionate. The following table will show roughly the numbers engaged on either side in the above three fights together with the leases in dead, wounded, and prisoners. The figures are authentic, being taken from my work on the. War, published by Allen & Co., in 1883, entitl ed With the Boers in the Transvaal and three editions.
