IMPORTANT PUBLIC MEETING.

A meeting of shipowers, merchants, and those affected by the quarantine imposed against Penang by the Netherlands Indies and Selangor was held at that port on the zoth Inne. The meeting was largely attended, some hundred and fifty being present. Mr. A. Huttenbach, wht presitled, said that the above mentinued quarantine was a danger to Penang They had to fear stagnation of trade and diffi- culty in moving their stocks; and as to the future, they lind to fear that their trade was being pa

that quarter. Still, all the merchants and tradent at Penang needed to bury the hatchet of opposition, and avoid competition as much as possible at the present juncture. He had explained all this to the Chetties and they had promised him not to press their customers at present." This was all he had to say regarding trade.

Mr. Huttenbach continued by showing that

COLONIES IN TIE HARKET.

The sale of the remaining Spanish Colonies in the Pacific to Germany has revived the question of Denmark parting with the thres lands belonging to her in the West Indies. Although the negotiations for their transfer to the United States several years ago fell through, it is generally understood that the Government is willing to sell them, and further negotiations are shortly expected. Germany seems wishful to compete with the United States for their purchase. The three islands are Santa Cruz, San Juan, and St. Thomas. This last possesses an excellent harbour.
