In a recent issue we published a state- ment to the effect that the Universal Gaselle had stated that the Viceroy of Canton had telegraphed to Peking praising the action of tie nich who opposed the taking over of the Kowloon Hinterland by the British and that the despatches had, by some means or other, fallen into the hands of the British represent- ative at Peking, to the great disgust of the Tsungli Yamen. Whether от the Universal Gazette is correct in its statement we are unable to say, but rumour is very basy with the Canton officials just at present, and there can hardly be smoke without flame. Our Shanghai contemporary, the Mercury, goes even further and states that official information from Peking shows that

matter.

WHAT CAN THE INDEMNITY DE 2.

It is difficult to say what the indemnity, if such has been demanded, would be, but it is certain that it should be a heavy one and one that would show the Chinese officials that we are not to be trifled with: We are all only too well aware that.British prestige has suffered much of late years, until the Chinese regard us as of practically no account, easily to be put off by specious promises, and afraid to resort to force, Therefore, we trust that the indemnity demanded will be large, and will include certain matters that require clearing up once | and for all. China should be made to repent hur, promise with regard to the non alienation of the Yangtze Valley, and the promise should be couched in sach ternis as to preclude the possibility of a loophole of escape being left should the wily Tsungli Yamen try to repudiate A similar promise with regard to the provinces of Kwang-tung, Kwang-si and Yunnan should be demanded, for, as we have before pointed out, it is imperative that these provinces should be included in the British sphere. Unfortunately our states men have not yet learnt to appreciate the fact that Oriental diplomacy is merely an other term for trickery, and that a badly worded promise is made with a definite object that it may be broken when Occasion arises.
