Can you for a moment suppose, Mr. Editor, that the other Fawers would be content to sit calmly by and allow Great Britain to say "this or that Province shall be included in my sphere?" I do not think that they would do so and I greatly doubt if the game would be worth the candle. All that we require is the open door, and that, I believe, is' assured to us for some time to come. If we attempt to create spheres of influence it will necessarily lead to endless squabbling amongst the Powers and probably so war, and I, for one, say, "le: well

From this valley Lord Roberts: started on his famous campaign against Kabul after the murder of Sir Louis Cavagnari.
The Chamkinnis are a tribe given over to robbery, rapine, and brutal raids. They are Sunni Mahommedans, while the Turiés who inhabit the Karam, are Shiaks, and each sect hating the other with the bitterest religious animosity, they have always been at constant strife. Since, the Indian Government took over the Kurai in 1882, the Turis have been restrained from retaliation, while the Cham kannis have continued their ancient raids. Matters came to such a pass that last month it was decided to take vigorous action.
Captain Roos-Keppel, who was in command of the force, made up his mind to march against the enemy the very night he received orders. Absolute secrecy was essential. At 8 pm. a cordon of cavalry vedettes was placed all round Parachenar, the military station in the Kuran to prevent any news getting across the border, At 8.30 p.m.
