building purposes. Excellent pottery clay is to be found on the slopes of Taito Shin, and brick clay is found in all the valleys, An abandoned lead mine exists on the side of Taimo Shan and galena is known to exist near Kowloon, on the south side of the island of Lantao and elsewhere, while the natives speak of alluvial tin being found. An abandoned silver and lead mine exists on the south side of the island of Lantao and was probably abandoned owing to Chi- nese official inteference and bad manage ment.. Both Mr. LOCKHART and Mr. ORMSAY recommend that a mining expert should be deputed to examine and report upon the mineral resources of the territory and we trust that the Government will see their way to carrying out the suggestion.

COTTON AND INDIGO,

Mr. LOCKHART mentions that experiments are being made to ascertain whether the cotton plant will flourish in the newly leased area, and is of opinion that, so far as soil and climate are concerned, the trials should prove to be successful. This should open up a new industry, far, even if the growing of cotton cannot be undertaken by Europeans on a large scale, it may very well prove to be a source of lucrative' employment to a large number of Chinese and will; as Mr. Lock HART points out, enable the cotton mill, now in course of erection, to obtain at least a portion of its supplies locally. Indigo is also mentioned as one of the products of the new territory and would be well worth in- vestigating...

VEGETABLES.

One of the needs of Hongkong for some time past has been a better supply of rege tables, and in the acquisition of the new territory we see great possibilities. It is a well-known fact that the valleys contained in [w 5 the new territory are far and away more fer

tile than those of Hongkong or the old Kowloon district. Once the range of hills at the back of the old boundary is passed, one is surprised at the fertility of the country, which is fairly well wooded and presents 2 striking contrast to the barrenness of the southern side of the range. Once good A. S. WATSON & Co., roads are constructed, or the light railways,

CATTLE RAISING,

The same may be said of our meat supply, for the report states that excellent pasturage is to be found on the range of Taimo Shan, stretching to the west towards Castle Peak Bay, on which many thousands of cattle, horses and sheep could be reared. At pre- sent the cattle in the district are kept solely for agricukural purposes, but there can be no doubt that cattle raising for the Hongkong market would be a paying, undertaking, and should also benefit the population by reduc ing the present high price of 'beef. ̧· At pre- sent a very large proportion of Hongkong's fresh food supply is drawn from. Canton, and should war happen to interrupt the traffic and cut off supplies we should be left in véry unpleasant predicament. If the new territory can be brought to render us in a | degree self-supporting and independent of outside sources for our food supply it will not have been acquired to no purpose.

GERMANY AND THE CAPE-CAIRO RAILWAY.

THE Americans secured possession of Cebu without striking a blow, and no wonder, for Captain, Hallstrom, who was there with his ship the Hikosan Maru, when the surrender took place, says that the Filipinos had only about four rifles to every 100 men. He used to see them-about 500-drilling every mom ing, those without rifles having bamboos, Captain Green and the Pigmy were present to protect British property. Captain Hallstrom got his cargo of between 2,000 and 3,000 tons of sugar aboard without any trouble, · He was the only merchant ship in port at the time.

CONCERT AT MOUNT AUSTIN.

A most enjoyable concert was given at Mount Austin Barracks, last Saturday, in the Recreation Room, with the double object of providing healthy amusement for the soldiers stationed there, and in aid of a charity school. The entertainment being for the soldier, we were pleased to note that soldiers and their naval comrades were admitted free; this privilege was extremely popoluar as the seats than half of the large hall, were densely packed at the back, although occupying more,

by a most enthusiastic audience of red and blue jackets.

It will be remembered that previous to the military occupation of Mount Austin, what a splendid ball-room the hotel contained, this rcom is now used as a Recreation Room and last Saturday made a most pleasing picture, having a slage, declied with pot plants, erected at the end nearest the.. The home authorities have at last decided where H.M.S. Victorious shall be docked. It was intended that the ship should have started this morning on a four-days' prze-shooting trip, but the idea has been abandoned on account of orders being received to proceed to Japan for the purpose of decking at Yokosaka. The -vessel will have to be lightened considerably, probably to a 25-fest draught, before she will be able to get into the dock; but this lightening of the ship sufficiently to get hier into the Yokosáka basin is not considered as big a risk as the attempt to get into the Hongkong dock, which has "only six inches of space to spare," şu there is now, every chance, us was hinted in
