Hangkeng, April 4h, :899. FUNERAL OF SERGEANT COUTS

This afternoon the remains of Sergeant Couts, who had been a meniher of the Hong, kong Police Force for the last to years, were interred in the Centetery at Happy Valley in the presence of many of his late comrades The Sergeant died at the hospital yesterday, peritonitis being the cause of his death. He was very popular with the force. He was only 34 years of age. **

MR. T. SERCOMBE SMITH AND. RICKSHA OWNERS.

At the Magistracy yesterday Mr. T. Sercombe Smith made an observation of some interest to ricksha owners. Mr. J. J. Spooner was driving along Bonham Strand in a public richsha when a private ricksha occupied by a Chinaman came along in the opposite direction. The Chinaman was on the wrong sideofthe road, and in swerving across to his right side caught air. Spooner's ricksha and upset it, Mt. Spooner being thrown into the road. On regaining his fee; he seized the Chinaman and his coolie and handed them over to the police. In fining the coolic $10 for being on the wrong side of the road, Mr. Smith he should really be in the coolie's place, as he told the owner that he ought to pay the fine, as considered the owner to be responsible for his | coolie being on the wrong side of the road.
