THE JUNIOR NAVAL OFFICERS,
RECREATION ROOMS
A very interesting ceremony took place at the Naval Yard this afternoon on the occasion of the opening of the Junior Naval Officers Recreation Room by Master Cedric S. Holland son of the much respected Rear Admiral Holland, late Commodore of H. M. Naval Establishment, Hongkong.
A richly engmved silver key was presented by Owen Ordish Esq., S. C. E. and after the presentation, Admiral Holland made in very touching speech on the necessity of having such a place for the young officers and thanked those: present who, took such an interest in their welfare.
The Commander-in-Chief, Vice-Admiral Sir E..H. Seymour, K.C.B., returned thanks and stated, that he considered it a great necessity, and, that thanks were due to Admiral · Hof- land for the interest he took in the young officers.
Master Cedric S-Holland then opened the door and in so doing expressed a hope that it would have every success, and after entering, the toast was drunk to the prosperity of the Junior Naval Officers' Recreation Room.

It is a matter of certainty that a notable
quantity of milk which is suld to the public contains tubercle bacilli, and persons who drink
it in an uncooked condition incur some risk of Infection. In a small proportion ofcases tubercle may be detected in milk by microscopic examination, and such milk is always highly dangerous. It ought to be clearly understood however, that failure to detect the bacill by microscopic examination of milk is not reliable evidence that such milk is free from the germs of tuberculosis. That was conclusive. Now, the report might have led to some dangerous panic, like the Inoculation one, but, luckily, it has had the opposite effect. It would seem that the Queen has directed that every house holder and tenant, who is dispossessed, must be liberally recompensed and granted a free site at Assen- sole, so all the petty shop-keepers and gharri: wallahs and coolics are looking forward with pleased anticipation to the time when the Co- vernment will open its purse-strings, and the exodus begin.

RESCUED WITH A BICYCLE. A novel rescue from drowning was witnessed racently near London, While a number of boys were playing on some canal barges ono of them, cloven years of age, fell into the water, and must have doubtless perished but for the promptitude of a young fellow who was passing on his bicycle. Hearing rscreams from the drowning boy he immediately mounted the barges with his bicycle on his shoulder, and was on the point of undressing to go into the water when the drowning boy made his appenmnes on the surface for the third time Seeing there was no time to be lost, the rescuer fastened his pocket handkerchief to the front wheel of his bicycle, and lowered it to the unfortunate boy just as he was again disappear Ing. INTERESTING DISCOVERY..
The 54th degree of south latitude was reached towards the end of November, and here a discovery, or rather a re-discovery, was made when Bouvet Island, which was first dis- covered and its reckoning lost in 1823, was come across, Though the island was sup.. posed to be in that region, the exact location was not set down, and it had been altogether lost sight of It was, by n mere chance, come across by the Paldivia and the exact spot was located, it being 34 deg. 30 min. S., and 3 deg. 31 min. E. The island however, could not be visited as the sea was very rough. Then followed a long passage till the Keeling, or Cocos, Islands, were reached. This was in the second week in January. In that quarter the deepest sounding was made.
THE GREATEST DEPTH.
The lead touched the bottom at 5,911 metros (3'13 miles) in 18,deg, 176 min. S. and 90 deg. 198 min. E. In the South Polat regions, too, great depths were recorded-5,733 mattres in 58 deg. 5 min. S. and 35 deg. 53 min E., while 5,800 metres was recorded in 15 deg. 8 min. S and 96 deg. 20 min. E. But of course the greatest depth yet discovered has been in the South Pacific, where the wire cable snapped at a depth of 4 miles. After leaving the Cocos Islands, the vessel went up to Padang at the mouth of the Padang River, on the west coast of Sumatra, and of this place the most valuable and in teresting specimens of marine creatures were collected. The botanist of the party, made a long visit ashore, going into the interior plant, collecting, while the others were fully engaged in fishing off the place. The Nicobar Islands south of the Andamans was the last place called at, before proceeding to Colombo, and there the Valdivia stayed only two hours,Straits
